As Azerbaijan prepares to host COP29, JPT looks back at how the country prospered for millennia on its largess of oil and gas and its unique geography along the ancient Silk Road that today is traversed by pipelines delivering gas and oil to Europe from the depths of the Caspian Sea. Oil & Natural Gas Source Rock: Black Shale -- Field Observation Date: December 26, 2023. -- Specific Location (Blue Mountains, Jamaica): 💥Premium Content. -- Jamaica (onshore & offshore) does have Natural Gas & Oil. The firewater in Windsor, St. Ann is a popular example of a natural gas seep. Whether or not Jamaica can extract the JIS media (2021), reported 2.4 billion barrels, is yet to be known concretely. What is for certain is that field findings such as this serve as an incentive for further onshore-offshore exploratory work (geologic, seismologic, geochemical). Similarly, this outcrop exists near a farming community and is drained by many tributaries... -- Hike & Geo-Explore Adventures. "The phrase “energy transition” is a common shorthand for the elimination of fossil fuels. But, as the economic historian Adam Tooze argued in March, its suggestion of a smooth shift from one mode to another fails to adequately capture the radical nature of the challenge ahead — the total transformation of global energy production required to address the climate crisis. Coal, gas, and oil still account for more than 60 percent of humanity’s total electricity generation. These need to be phased out immediately; extant and planned fossil fuel projects are almost certain to push the globe past two degrees Celsius of warming. And new energy sources will need to meet surging global electricity demand, which is expected to double, at minimum, in the coming decades. 'The wholesale displacement of fossil fuels across global electricity generation, with overall capacity expanded to twice its current size, in the space of a single generation, will be a truly staggering undertaking,' Tooze writes." Nick Bowlin provides an insightful dive into the geopolitical, environmental, and social costs of the energy transition for The Drift. #energytransition

In the Caribbean, there is a ~850km long Volcanic Island Arc associated with subduction of the Atlantic Plate under the Caribbean Plate. There are multiple good Volcanic Geothermal Play prospects and the unrisked estimates of Geothermal potential are quite high. There is some progress with exploratory drilling and some early developments, but generally there is much more potential to be exploited. Transformational, economic clean energy that would be important indigenous energy resources so that expensive, imported carbon emission intensive energy sources could be reduced. As with other developing countries, relatively small amounts of financial support from multilaterals, friendly governments, and green climate funds would provide the necessary stimulus to help obtain early stage equity funding for Public Private Partnerships to derisk prospects and proceed into more developments. Prof. Iain Stewart presents how oil reshaped the world in the last century. As an oil country, Azerbaijan is no exception in having a share in this transformation. It is inevitable that the world will change again with the depletion of oil in the near future. But what will replace it this time?! #Naftalan Oil is indeed medicine for many diseases as the author mentioned in the documentary. I have been in that oil bath couple of times and my first reaction was similar ;) So I invite everyone to take this oil bath before it runs out. The Three Gorges Dam in China is the world's largest hydroelectric facility, with an installed capacity of 22,500 megawatts. It's a gravity dam that spans the Yangtze River in Hubei province, and is 181 meters tall and 2.33 kilometers wide. The dam is so large that it can be seen from space. Is built and commissioned in last decade it has added / concentrated weight on earth’s surface which has slowed the earth’s rotation speed and also tilted the equinox angle slightly resulting in climate change leading to untold geological activities like accelerated anticipated yellow stone volcanic eruption There is delicate and fraigle balance or equilibrium of our planet which can be disturbed by such man made structures and activities.

Why ‘Middle East’ float on oil? The oil-rich Iran, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman, and Yemen have 3.4% land of the world. Yet they have 48% oil and 38% gas reserves. Why and how? Geo-tectonics and favourable oil genesis conditions, millions of years ago. The areas evolved in the vicinity of the Tethys Ocean which developed gradually as Proto, Paleo, and Neo-Tethys. Some of the present land areas remained submerged through different ages. Continental fragments successively broke away from the Gondwana margin and drifted northward to join the Asian continent. The opening of each Tethys was accompanied by extensional tectonics, subduction, and continental rifts. These rift basins added favourable sites for petroleum generation in the region. Organic-rich source rocks (total organic carbon >5%) were deposited on a passive continental-shelf margin spanning the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic and younger periods. Climate conditions for algal growth, brighter light intensity, greater mineralization, sea-level rises, and nutrient-rich upwelling off the coasts served as favourites. These marine shales and marls contained oil-generating kerogen types I and II. #Tethys, #genesisofpetroleum Video/image credits – scotese, encyclopaedia britannica, Geo Dharma

Daily #Geothermal post: Last in this short series on South Africa, the KwaZulu-Natal Province has a tectonic sedimentary basin north of Durban called Zululand Basin. Crustal thinning associated with a basaltic ridge may be the reason for elevated geothermal gradients, but there may also be a tectonically active feature below the sediments. More geophysical work is required to identify the source of the heat flow, but multiple boreholes have demonstrated the heat in this Geothermal Play prospect. #Africa #SouthAfrica #KwaZuluNatal

Scottish scientists to capture CO2 in volcanic rocks granted £1m: A research team is working on a study to determine the viability of a method that uses basalt volcanic rock to transform collected carbon dioxide (CO2) into minerals. The UK Government has given the team a grant of £1 million to investigate cutting-edge techniques for tracing carbon dioxide (CO2) storage inside volcanic rock. #basalt #Carbfix #carboncaptureandstorage #carbondioxide #carbonstorage #climatechange #Efficiency&Environment #energymarket #energytransition #globalheating #INCLUSIONproject #mineralisation #minerals #Scotland #TopStories #UKenergy #UKGovernment #universityofedinburgh
