Director UCHWA/Community Health Worker at University of Utah/Independent CHW Contractor/Business Owner
Bottom Up Public Health! As we are looking at innovative ways to decrease the costs and inequities of health care, I think about this bottom up approach that CHWs have been implementing in Utah in sharing the continued success of the work we do that is boots on the ground and supports the most vulnerable and underserved populations and how we have been doing this for decades unnoticed, unrecognized, under the radar because of who we are. We are community members helping community members. No credentialed degree or expertise from an academic institution just the lived experiences we have had face to face with systemic racism and barriers that generations of our community have endured. As we built our capacity to earn a seat at the table learning the system, hustling through obtaining an education defeating all odds to ensure we could share our successes with other communities and spread the wealth of knowledge from those experiences we are rising slowly but surely. But how long more, what more do we need to do for systems to recognize the ineffectiveness of the current policies and structure for a total destruction of the system and opportunity to rebuild? How many more people have to die? How many more people have to endure chronic disease? How many more people do we need to see homeless or dealing with mental health issues due to a lack of access to needed MH services due to cost or lack of insurance? YES I understand that this is not the be all end all solution but it is not enough to just be invited to have a seat at the table. Current members at the table need to stand up for the changes at the table. Diversify the members to represent the diversity of the issues we are facing. That alone will change the dynamics and decisions made at the table. Expect some difficult conversations and AHA moments because this is what innovation looks and feels like. It feels scary. It feels uncomfortable. But you will be surprised at how the opportunity to relinquish some power and even some money might change things a whole lot. It will get worse before it gets better but it will get better. Right now we cant afford to get in a more worse place than we are as a country.
Our Executive Director Denise Octavia Smith was a presenter during the APHA session "Bottom-Up Public Health," where panelists discussed the grassroots advocacy process crucial to CHW's attempts to achieve equity for minority populations. Thanks to everyone who came out! #APHA
