It's interesting to look at the business of pro sports teams... You’re more similar to your competitors than you think. “You don’t need to be a winner in Formula One” Certainly, not a sentiment held by most teams, but the thinking behind Chipotle's CMO Chris Brandt. There are many ways the teams in the paddock trying to differentiate themselves 1) Content 2) Reputation 3) Sponsorships With the Chipotle sponsorship thats what Haas has aimed to do. Normally there is an inability to distinguish yourself from your competitors. Chipotle is capitalizing on its partnership with MoneyGram Haas F1 Team partly because of Gunther Steiner's new rise in stardom and their potential reach increased reach in the US and visibility in the Middle East. Instead of heading to teams like Red Bull where they would have been priced out. Here’s a campaign I’ve been dying to replicate since I came across it in 2021. The Carolina Panthers developed a platform called, “Building the Team With Lowe’s”. The campaign attached Lowe's Companies, Inc. to roster moves including player signings, trades, contract extensions, and NFL Draft picks. Not only did the moniker make a seamless tie to the brand, but the connection also gave Lowe’s a year-round presence with the team since roster moves of all kinds happen at any time. It’s a great blend of valuable assets for the partner and it solves a key issue for the team. Even though team transactions perform well and are valuable, the issue with tying partners to this type of content in some instances (e.g. trades, extensions) is you never know how many there will be in a year. This package gave Lowe’s a good foundation of guaranteed assets by including them on an item like the Draft. Plus, there can be tremendous added value with one popular signing, extension, and or trade. #sportsbusiness #sportsmarketing #sponsorship

Once again, the perfect partnership ingredients in action 👇 A few weeks ago I noted now the recipe for the best partnership activations: 1 part on pitch relevance 1 part timing 1 part bravery 1 part surprise 1 part simplicity Add a sprinkling of humour And if available, a complementary partner This weekend we had another wonderful execution example this time between Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase and 7-Eleven. The context is brilliant. 2 weeks ago, after setting a new Bengals' single-game record with 15 catches during a game, Chase tweeted, "7/11," with a photo of the store. Chase had told reporters after the Bengals' loss to the Titans, "I'm open. I'm always f---ing open.". "Always open" being a tagline of 7/11. The 7/11 team jumped at the opportunity. Quickly partnering with Chase and launching a collection in time for the game this gone weekend, where he wore a 7/11 pendant. Of course slightly ridiculous, but brilliant. Naturally, the pendant has already sold out. But better than that, it made 7/11 highly relevant in a moment that could have easily passed. Disclaimer: Fanboy alert 🚨 But… what a speech! Yesterday, Dirk Nowitzki was officially inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame 🏀🏆 and he gave the most incredible award acceptance speech. Being a true G.O.A.T., he took the audience through the different stages of his exceptional career 🚀. For each of these stages, he highlighted a person who was instrumental and connected them to individual learnings 💡. He did this without being preachy, but yet highly emotional , full of gratitude, and with quite a bit of humor too. What an incredible role model, hard worker 💪, and exceptional athlete 🏅: - Born in a small town in Bavaria 🥨 (like me :-)) - Left Germany to play in the NBA at the age of twenty ✈️ - Played for the same club (Dallas Mavericks) throughout his entire professional career - Won every title there is (NBA MVP in 2007, 14x NBA All-Star, NBA Championship in 2011) - 6th highest scorer of all time in the NBA But more importantly, what a person! I had the pleasure to meet Dirk twice in the mid-00s during commercial productions when I worked for Nike. Each time, he was humble, nice, and really funny, without any superstar behavior at all. During lunch breaks, our entire crew sat around on transport boxes eating pizza together 🍕. There is this one story where apparently all the Mavericks players were asked what personalization they would like to have for their seat in the Mavericks jet ✈️ – and while most opted for gaming consoles 🎮, Dirk asked for a bookshelf 📚. Not sure if it's really true, but the fact that it absolutely could be says it all 🤷♂️. So yes, I am a Dirkules fanboy – and that is okay with me 😅. Diversity in sports ownership is breaking the archetypes and expectations and making room for dynamic stakeholders in many professions, but is systemically inequitable for marginalized members seeking majority ownership. For instance, there are many finding opportunity for majority and minority ownership of various sports. Shelia Johnson, co-founder of BET and CEO of Salamander Hotels and Resorts, has co-ownership of the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, and the WNBA’ Washington Mystics. Additionally, issues around equity and barriers (beyond capital) have reduced marginalized majority ownership NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, nor the WNBA to zero (Black Enterprise Magazine) but Diverse Representation is strategizing this week to change this.
