At SPR, we're committed to ongoing learning about racial equity and justice. Our monthly staff discussions on this topic recently highlighted the insightful "Brown at 70" series by Learning Policy Institute. A standout piece for our team was "Reclaiming the Promise of Brown: The Integration of Desegregation & School Funding Reform." So we’re sharing it! https://lnkd.in/g25k7bZT

We were thrilled to partner with W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Eternal Knot Evaluation to produce the three-volume Spotlight Series: Organizational Journeys in Centering Racial Equity. Take a peek at The Corps Network’s approach and be as inspired as we are by its dedication to fostering inclusive environments and addressing systemic inequities to better serve its 150 member corps and the 20,000 young people and veterans improve their communities through Corps programs each year. https://lnkd.in/gBR5_kP4
The legacy of FDR's Civilian Conservation Corps lives on through The Corps Network (TCN), providing environmental justice and economic mobility for 25,000 young adults and veterans each year. TCN's commitment to racial equity began at the grassroots level, leading to the launch of the Moving Forward Initiative in 2017. Key benefits of this initiative include: - A deeper understanding of structural racism and unconscious bias - Rethinking post-service opportunities for Corpsmembers - Formal investments in racial equity programming - Creation of advisory councils to prioritize Corpsmembers’ experiences Navigating a network of 139 organizations, TCN's approach demonstrates how complex networks can engage in meaningful racial equity conversations. Explore Union for Reform Judaism’s efforts to unpack whiteness and recognize intersectional identities in the Reform Jewish community. W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Racial Equity Spotlight #1 highlights key lessons and resources documented by SPR and Eternal Knot Evaluation.
Over the past 150 years, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) has become the largest organization supporting North American Jewish life, including nearly 850 congregations and 1.8 million Jewish believers. Amidst its commitment to social justice, URJ faced a pivotal moment in 2014 after the tragic deaths of Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice and Sandra Bland. In response to calls from Black and Brown Jews for greater leadership on racial equity, URJ undertook significant changes. Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner highlighted the need to confront internal racism and take a more vocal role. URJ restructured, dedicating staff to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion (REDI) and hired Yolanda Savage-Narva as the first REDI assistant vice president. The REDI team focused on honesty about whiteness within the Jewish community, developing a curriculum to address white supremacy culture. By 2020, URJ launched a Community Self-Assessment Tool, engaging over 2,000 people from 400 congregations in REDI training by April 2021. For organizations grappling with racial identity complexities, URJ’s approach to destabilizing white supremacy culture offers valuable insights. Learn more about URJ’s transformative work: https://wkkf.co/nefq
