How a Coffee Chat with a Vendor Saved Our Project Deadline! . . . In the high-stakes world of product development, #VendorManagement often gets reduced to price negotiations and contracts. But there's a not-so-talked-about aspect that can make all the difference – the power of genuine relationships. Let me share a story from the trenches that highlights this unique perspective... A few years ago, we faced a critical challenge. One of our key components was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, putting our entire project timeline at risk. Traditional vendor management protocols weren't cutting it. That's when I decided to try something unconventional. 1️⃣ Building Bridges 🔸 Beyond Transactions: I reached out to our vendor contact for an informal chat. We talked about our shared challenges, future goals, and even personal interests. This wasn't about negotiating terms; it was about building a real connection. 2️⃣ The Ripple Effect 🔸Mutual Understanding: Through these conversations, we gained deeper insights into each other's operations and constraints. This mutual understanding paved the way for more effective problem-solving and #collaboration. 3️⃣ The Game Changer 🔸Proactive Solutions: Our vendor, now fully invested in our success, went above and beyond. They reallocated resources, expedited processes, and even provided alternative solutions we hadn't considered. What could have been a project-halting delay was mitigated through their proactive support. 4️⃣ A New Perspective 🔸Collaborative Partnerships: This experience taught me that vendor management isn't just about managing supply chains; it's about cultivating partnerships. When vendors feel like partners rather than just providers, they’re more likely to invest in your #success. 5️⃣ The Human Element 🔸Investing in People: By valuing our vendors as integral parts of our team, we fostered a culture of mutual respect and support. This human-centric approach not only improved project outcomes but also created a more positive and productive working environment. 6️⃣ Future-Focused Strategies 🔸Regular Engagement: I now prioritize regular check-ins and collaborative workshops with our key vendors. This continuous engagement helps me stay ahead of potential issues and fosters innovation. 🔸Long-Term Vision: By focusing on long-term relationships rather than short-term gains, we’ve created a network of vendors who are as committed to our success as we are to theirs. Redefine Your Vendor Relationships- Building genuine relationships can transform the entire development process If you're looking to truly transform your development process, I encourage you to look beyond contracts and negotiations. ✅ Invest in building genuine relationships with your vendors. The returns on this investment are far-reaching and game-changing. #HardwareDevelopment #TechLeadership #Innovation #SupplyChainSuccess #ProductDevelopment #StartYourWeek #MondayMotivation #Leadership

A success behind any sort of partnership with the vendor always depends on transparency aspect of the relationships built. As fresh as this week, I read my teams sad stories on - the client having losses on their side because the deadline put to the team was not properly communicated, and of course screwed up - the client now missing part of our team because they had to admit that part was not performing up t their expectations. Though the expectations were unfortunately never communicated - the client losing an investment opportunity because the project handover plan offered by vendor was never considered until now it was too late to perform one The majority of suppliers have their best interest to make a story of success to any client they work with. It is often the choice of the business to understand what and how they want to be transparent on. Yet, without enough transparency I cannot remember any client who was doing it well long run. It just does not work in the domain of #nearshoring

As I was sitting in a meeting with my team, discussing the challenges we were facing with our IT vendors, I couldn't help but think about how crucial vendor management is in today's fast-paced business world. From negotiating contracts to ensuring timely delivery of services, IT vendor management plays a vital role in the success of any organization. But let's be honest, it's not an easy task. It requires patience, communication, and most importantly, a strategic approach. But fear not, my fellow professionals, for I have some valuable insights to share with you. After years of experience in the IT industry, I have learned a thing or two about effective vendor management. And today, I want to share them with you. First and foremost, establish a clear line of communication with your vendors. This not only helps in building a strong relationship but also ensures that any issues or concerns are addressed promptly. Trust me, a simple phone call can save you from a potential disaster. Next, always have a backup plan. As much as we want our vendors to deliver on time, sometimes things go wrong. And in those moments, having a backup plan can save the day. Lastly, never underestimate the power of collaboration. Previous vendors can turn into future clients or employers. Properly allocating IT budget is crucial for Startups and SMB's projected growth. I can show you how to do a lot... with a little!

“Good, you have heard about me - that will make this much easier”. I was asked to join a meeting that was already underway. Members of my company where meeting with a large technology provider to discuss a really complicated business issue and ways to solve it. The meeting had been underway for an hour or so when someone thought that perhaps I should have been included to begin to consider what the contractual relationship might look like and highlight risks. I walk in and everyone stands but one person. Introductions are made and when I get to the person who did not stand, he says to me “oh you’re that Colleen Mahoney” and I responded “Oh good, you have heard about me - that will make this much easier”. It turns out this gentleman was on a different project at a different company where I was asked to come in and lead the contractual team. There were too many risks for either company to move forward so the project did not happen. And he remembered me as the reason it did not go forward. All this to say, what happens in one company doesn’t say there. People talk. How you conduct yourself matters. Treat everyone with respect and expect the same from them. Be willing to call out risks and problems when you see them and know that others may hold that against you. That is ok. In this case I did the right thing for both my company and the vendor (the project would have been a complete disaster for both sides). #contracts #negotiations #vendormanagement #technology #software #cios 👋 I’m Colleen. ➡️ I help senior leaders and their teams better manage the risks associated with engaging technology related vendors Want to see more posts from me? 🔔 Ring the bell on my profile ✅ Connect with me
