🔊 The Translator: A Vital Role in Leadership 🔊 During a recent interview, I was posed with a very interesting question: "Why do you see yourself as a translator in your role as a manager?" At first glance, the term "translator" might bring images of language professionals bridging linguistic gaps across different countries. However, the essence of translation goes far beyond words; it lies in the ability to convey meaning and context between diverse groups. And this skill is indispensable in the realm of organizational leadership, particularly when overseeing multifunctional teams. In my journey as a manager, I've come to realize that my role as a translator extends beyond mere words. It's about interpreting and distilling overarching goals, strategies, and visions set by leadership into actionable insights that resonate with various team members. Consider this scenario: As a leader, you receive directives and objectives from upper management. These directives, while clear to you, may require translation to align with the unique perspectives and responsibilities of your technical (why not, you need to know also how to code, this will help you to lead with the example 🤓 ), administrative, and stakeholder teams. Each group operates within its own domain, with distinct priorities and communication styles. As a translator-leader, it's my responsibility to bridge these gaps, ensuring that every team member not only understands the goals but also feels motivated and empowered to contribute towards achieving them. 🔊 Moreover, effective translation isn't a one-time task; it's an ongoing process that evolves with the dynamic needs of the organization. It involves active listening, empathy, and adaptability to tailor messages in a way that resonates with different audiences. Ultimately, the true measure of success lies in seeing my team members not just comprehend the goals but embrace them with enthusiasm. When everyone speaks the same language of purpose and alignment, incredible things can be accomplished. 💡 So, why do I see myself as a translator in my managerial role? Because much like a linguistic translator, I strive to bridge the gap between vision and execution, ensuring that every voice is heard, understood, and empowered to contribute towards our collective success. The words we translate and interpret are laden with nuances, cultural contexts, and emotions that require not only language proficiency but also a high level of emotional intelligence. 💡 Here are the key components of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership and how they relate to the translation industry: Self-Awareness: Knowing your own emotions, strengths, and limitations is crucial. A self-aware leader can confidently manage a team of translators, while acknowledging the areas where they can improve. Self-Regulation: The ability to keep calm under pressure is vital for handling challenges, such as tight deadlines and complex translation projects. Motivation: A self-motivated leader with a passion and drive for linguistic excellence can inspire their team to strive for the same. Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others helps build strong relationships with both team members and international clients. Social Skills: Effective communication is crucial for navigating team dynamics, managing client expectations, and fostering a positive, productive work environment. 📝 The importance of feedback and its impact 📝 Last Friday, I received a very positive comment from a Project Manager who I work with. I would like to share it with you as the comments were highly enriching, but it was a Skype audio. Literally, she described my work as "exceptional" and that I was "doing very well" in this agency. These type of comments are the great fuel that motivates us linguists to continue performing this exceptional work and even improve our skills. Although feedback is always welcomed and it's even vital to improve our performance, I think the key is also in the ways in which one chooses to share such comments. For example, in past experiences, I have received such negative feedbacks that made me question my knowledge and abilities, even though the corrections were not many nor were they serious errors, but rather preferential ones. All in all, if you are checking another linguist's work and you recognize their performance was impeccable, do not think twice in letting them know! ECHO or TRANSLATOR? A toddler is amazed by the sound of their voice echoing off the walls of a large, empty room. I’m amazed by the echo heard down a valley from a high cliff. The sound reverberates, seeming to go on forever. The leadership voice of a good leader is heard in the hearts and heads of those they’ve had the privilege to lead, much like these echoes. The simple phrases, meaningful stories, and short video clips of behaviors and interactions reverberate to guide us. These echoes help us to balance the endless, daily workload with the broader purpose of why we are here. But it's not good to always be an ECHO leader....here's the explanation: Great leaders or big companies always have a vision, which will determine the future steps and direction of an organization. A vision born from a leader is broad and general, and the more the vision is implemented at the lower level, the more detailed the strategy will be in implementing it so that the vision can be realized. This is where the importance of middle leadership in a company, which must be smart enough to capture the vision from above, then formulate it wisely according to local wisdom: regulation, behavior and market conditions, with one goal for the leader's vision to be realized. Here we are...when implementing the strategy with local wisdom, a middle leader must not become an ECHO leader, who only echoes the voice of the leader above, because you will only create confusion at the lower level. Then what you have to do? Instead of being an ECHO leader you have to become a TRANSLATOR leader. Becoming a leader who translates a vision into a strategy that can be implemented at lower levels. In this way a vision can be realized. Well, as Jim Collins said: Great vision without great people is irrelevant. A vision should be fueled with a great team. So, what are you? Reflecting on the mundane aspects of my life as an interpreter and translator, it might seem frivolous to some, but in reality, these everyday experiences hold invaluable lessons, especially for those just starting out in the field. Looking back, I can't help but think how beneficial it would have been to have had a mentor guiding me through the early stages of my career. Imagine facing a challenging translation task with no one to turn to for advice or guidance. Without a mentor to provide insights, offer feedback, and share experiences, navigating through the complexities of translation can be daunting. A mentor could have provided me with valuable strategies for tackling difficult texts, tips for improving my linguistic skills, and advice on building a successful career in the industry. Having a mentor would have also offered emotional support during moments of uncertainty or self-doubt. Transitioning from academic studies to the professional world can be overwhelming, and having someone who has walked that path before can make all the difference. They could have offered reassurance, encouragement, and perspective when needed most. Furthermore, a mentor could have helped me avoid common pitfalls and pitfalls that often plague beginners in the field. Whether it's understanding the nuances of different language varieties, navigating cultural differences, or managing client relationships, having a mentor's guidance would have undoubtedly accelerated my learning curve and helped me develop into a more competent and confident translator. In hindsight, the absence of a mentor is a missed opportunity, but it also underscores the importance of mentorship in the translation profession. Now, as a seasoned professional, I strive to pay it forward by offering guidance and support to aspiring translators, knowing firsthand the difference it can make in shaping a successful career.
