I found that incredibly encouraging as a leader of a remote organization. I believe it's critical that I foster a culture that's open and transparent to help build connection among our employees, ensure everyone has what they need to be successful, and limit any timezone bias. As we grow, I'm motivated to continue taking steps to help us stay transparent. This article wonderfully summarizes 9 tactics to improve transparency at an organization and includes practical steps to achieve each tactic. Here's a quick recap: 1. Default to open: keep your communication on Slack/other communication in open channels whenever possible so everyone can stay in the loop 2. Lean into asynchronous communication: don't make everything a meeting - leverage tools to track work and record progress 3. Document processes and continuously improve: documentation helps create shared expectations 4. Manage the noise: update your documents often so they don't become outdated or "overgrown" 5. Record meetings and provide useful notes: no need for detailed minutes, but assign someone at important meetings to capture bulleted notes that would help those absent 6. Onboard new team members to transparency: train new employees on expectations and systems that contribute to the transparent culture 7. Make use of integrations, APIs and bots: take advantage of automation (ex. a bot that asks weekly check-in questions in Slack) 8. We aren't talking enough about how crucial remote team management is! There is a lot of buzz around WFH and WFO, and my feed is flooded with articles advocating for one or the other. While both have their own perks and challenges, the fact of the matter is that work is no longer what it was prior to the Covid era. Our outlook has shifted; mental health and work-life balance are now priorities, and for good reason. Remote and hybrid work arrangements are here to stay. Technology has played a crucial role in enabling this transition, offering tools that support global collaboration and productivity. The focus should be on hiring the right person for the job, regardless of their physical location. I have been immensely fortunate to work with an exceptional group of talent over the past five years, consistently meeting targets, acing growth and performance metrics, with physical location being the least of our concerns. What I've learned is that managing a remote team is a skill that requires constant honing. It's a delicate balance to achieve our KRAs while providing enough flexibility to my team. Ultimately, nearly everyone prioritizes growth and learning, and creating an environment conducive to these goals can significantly enhance employee retention and productivity, directly impacting revenue. Effective remote team management demands setting clear goals while nurturing flexibility and growth opportunities.
