Is Servant Leadership Just a Fancy Term for Being a Pushover? How does servant leadership hold up in tough, dog-eat-dog business environments? You know, the places where it's all about being decisive, taking charge, and sometimes stepping over others to get to the top. It might seem like being all altruistic and supportive would get you nowhere fast, right? But here's the thing: servant leadership is actually a powerhouse in these situations. Let’s cut through the fluff. Servant leadership isn't about being a pushover. It's the total opposite. It's about being strong enough to put your ego aside and prioritize your team's needs over your own. It's about having the guts to listen, empathize, and empower—things that require real courage and strength, especially in cutthroat environments. Think about it. Anyone can bark orders and demand results. It takes a real leader to roll up their sleeves, understand their team, and guide them to where they need to be. It's not about sacrificing authority; it's about redefining it. You lead by example, earn respect, and get your hands dirty with the rest of them. In those high-pressure, competitive settings, servant leadership is your secret weapon. It builds loyalty, trust, and a sense of ownership among your team. When people feel valued and understood, they'll go the extra mile, not because they're told to, but because they want to. That's how you create a team that doesn't just survive but thrives, even in the toughest environments. So, no, it's not about being soft. It's about being strategically and morally strong. It's about leading in a way that gets lasting, impactful results while also building a positive, resilient workplace culture.

Trust forms the foundation of any high-performing team. 🤝 It’s built incrementally, often through small gestures, and is rooted in the belief that something vulnerable and important to me is safe with you. That “something” could include my thoughts and ideas, my projects, my feelings, my reputation, or anything that makes me feel uncomfortable when entrusted to your decisions and actions. Building trust often involves time for people to observe consistent trustworthy behaviour. While trust can be earned over time by demonstrating reliability, consistency, competence, and handling critical information confidentially, this process is time-consuming. Most teams can't afford the luxury of dedicating extensive time to build trust before diving into collaborative work. You have to build trust on the fly, much like flying the plane while you build it. Teams are fluid. Members change over time. Ongoing projects and strategic initiatives starting, and day-to-day firefighting makes the luxury of building trust before anything else a fantasy. So, how do we build trust on the fly? In our latest blog post, Shawn Gibson P.Eng, PCC and Jenn Lofgren CPHR, MCC, ICD.D explore 6 ways to deepen trust, create an even stronger foundation, and elevate your team's performance to the next level. 🚀 #Trust #Leadership #ExecutiveLeadership #LeadershipCoaching #LeadershipDevelopment #LeadershipTeam

11 Traits of Servant Leaders First, recognize Servant Leadership is a calling: "The best test [for Servant Leadership] is: do those served grow as persons: do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?" -- Robert Greenleaf. Develop your Servant Leadership capacity by answering these questions: 2. LISTENING Am I committed to listening intently to others? Do I solicit ideas and feedback to gain insights, build trust, and strengthen my relationships? 3. EMPATHY Do I have the ability to understand and share the feelings of others? Can I connect with their team members on a deeper level? 4. HEALING Can I help mend the emotional hurts that others have suffered? Do I foster a culture of psychological safety and address conflicts or challenges constructively? Do I promote resilience, motivation, and a sense of belonging? 5. AWARENESS Am I aware of my strengths, weaknesses, and biases? Do I have a set of principles of character that foster trust? Do my actions align with my principles? Do I recognize my team members' needs, concerns, and aspirations? 6. PERSUASION: Rather than relying on my title, do I lead and inspire others? Is my vision compelling? Do I demonstrate integrity and build consensus to pursue common goals? 7. CONCEPTUALIZE: Do I envision long-term goals and strategies? Do I anticipate opportunities and challenges for sustainable growth and success? Do I have a visionary outlook that inspires confidence, fosters innovation, and enables my team to adapt to changing environments? 8. FORESIGHT: Do I anticipate trends, consequences, and implications of decisions? Do I consider the potential impact of my decisions on stakeholders, society, and the environment? Am I proactive? Do I mitigate risks, seize opportunities, and promote leadership? 9. STEWARDSHIP: Do I see myself as entrusted with the well-being of my team? Do I act with integrity and a commitment to the greater good? 10. COMMITMENT TO THE GROWTH OF OTHERS: Am I dedicated to the personal and professional development of my team? Do I actively mentor, coach, and train to empower individuals to reach their full potential and attain the team's goals? 11. BUILDING COMMUNITY: Do I foster a sense of community and belonging? Do I promote collaboration, diversity, and inclusion so that everyone feels valued, respected, and connected? SERVANT LEADERSHIP IS BEST SEEN IN ACTION: Are you leading by example, demonstrating humility, inspiring trust, empowering others, and creating a culture of service and excellence?
