🪶 Founder of Quill Science LLC | Empowering biopharma, life sciences, and medical PR companies with strategic scientific storytelling: translating complex research into engaging content 🧬
It is important to focus on a business niche. But it's important to focus on learning. One of the most crucial skills in freelancing/contracting is choosing projects, as there is limited bandwidth—taking on one project means you'll be saying no to another. So make sure the projects you take on are aligned with your goals, compensation, and values. The allure of a project can go beyond compensation and time. I sometimes choose to take on a project because of the learning opportunity, even if it may not be the most immediately lucrative. One of my strengths in medical strategy and communication is having a scientific focus with industry knowledge and PR communications experience. I've found that sometimes a project comes along that will help expand my view of a certain aspect of the industry, like access to care rather than the science behind treatment. I can see the value of sticking to a niche—focusing on that area of specialization makes you stand out and promotes the unique value you bring to your clients. That said, sometimes a project can be a learning opportunity while continuing to bring value to your clients, even if it's a little outside the usual offering. What do you think, network? Do you sometimes take projects outside your normal wheelhouse as a learning opportunity? +++ 👋 I’m Chris, a medical strategist, writer, and founder of Quill Science LLC.
