The term "broken windows" refers to the idea that if a window is broken and left unrepaired, people walking by will conclude that no one cares, thus more windows will be broken. The theory implies that maintaining and monitoring urban environments to prevent small crimes, such as vandalism, public drinking, and fare evasion, can create an atmosphere of order and lawfulness, thereby preventing more serious crimes from happening. This approach assumes that addressing small problems can help prevent larger ones from occurring. The Broken Windows Theory has been highly influential in the field of criminology and has been applied in various contexts, particularly in policing strategies and urban planning. However, it has also faced criticism, with some arguing that it oversimplifies the complexities of crime and social disorder and that it can lead to the disproportionate targeting of disadvantaged communities by law enforcement.
