Did you know there are 4 types of delegation? Direct – Supportive - Empowering - Collaborative Lovely words but how do I make that work for me? Well, here is some more detail and some examples so you can get a better feel for what they mean. Which do you think you use the most? Or do you have any other suggestions? Direct Delegation: Clearly define the task, expected outcome, and deadline. Suited for experienced team members requiring minimal guidance. For less experienced team members, provide additional resources or break down the task into smaller steps. Example: "Sarah, I need you to finalise the client report by Friday. The outline is in the shared folder, and let me know if you have any questions." Supportive Delegation: Explain the task context, desired outcome, and offer support throughout the process. Ideal for less experienced team members or complex tasks. Offer regular check-ins, provide relevant examples, and celebrate milestones to boost confidence. Example: "John, I'd like you to draft the marketing campaign proposal. Here's the project brief and competitor analysis. I'm available for brainstorming later, and feel free to check in any time!" Empowering Delegation: Share the overall goal, desired impact, and trust the team member to choose the approach. Best for highly motivated and experienced individuals. Set clear expectations for communication and deliverables, but encourage ownership and autonomy. Example: "We need to revamp the onboarding process. Let's brainstorm some solutions in today's meeting, and then I trust you to implement the best ideas with minimal oversight or input from me" Collaborative Delegation: Work together to define the task, brainstorm solutions, and share responsibility for execution.
