We are thrilled to announce our renewed partnership with Magdalene in Indonesia! Magdalene is a women-focused online publication that offers news and views with a gender perspective. Magdalene was founded in 2013 to fill the gap of media that capture issues that really affect women and cover news with intersectional feminist lens. Magdalene serves as a platform to represent and amplify voices of those rarely represented in the Indonesian media, including from minority and marginalised groups. Though the IW partnership, Magdalene will launch a new initiative called Serempak Setara (Together Towards Equality). This new initiative recognises that women’s participation and representation in workplace leadership is inevitably intertwined with their caring responsibilities. Serempak Setara aims to raise public awareness, shift perspectives and attitudes, inspire changemakers, and mobilise action to promote gender-equal sharing of care and economic roles. Happy Internaitonal Women's Day!👩👩🦱👵👧 I’m proud to share how Finland is supporting the UN's gender equality goals in Indonesia, especially in the fields of economic empowerment and digital inclusion for women. One of the Finnish companies that is leading by example is #Valmet, a global leader in process technologies, automation, and services for the pulp, paper, and energy industries. As a global company, Valmet understands the unique challenges women face in the workplace.   Valmet's HR manager in Indonesia, Retno Ayu, talks about the challenges that women face in the workplace due to cultural and social norms. Women are often expected to take care of the family, which limits their working hours and career opportunities.   "Work-life balance is a distinct challenge for women. Women are involved in working life but within the limits of the conditions dictated by the family. Previously, we shared insights into gender diversity in Indonesia. This week, we're bringing you the company rankings in Indonesia based on ExecuShe's most recent live data as of August of this year. It's intriguing to note that public companies in Indonesia exhibit executive leadership teams with gender diversity below 20%. Unilever Indonesia stands out, securing the top spot in the rankings. Their leadership team impressively showcases a gender diversity rate of 55%, with a balanced 6:5 ratio of women to men. Following closely is PT Kalbe Farma, Tbk, boasting a commendable 38% gender diversity rate and a gender ratio of 6:10. PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk holds the third position, with a 35% gender diversity rate and a ratio of 11:20. Looking at the chart, a clear pattern emerges. Unilever Indonesia, the leading company, notably surpasses the halfway mark in gender diversity. Yet, a common thread runs through all companies: gender diversity rates remain below 50%. In conclusion, Unilever Indonesia shines as a pioneer, but the overall picture highlights the ongoing journey towards enhanced gender diversity in the leadership of Indonesian public companies. Although Yara was ranked 7 in the global Equileap 2024 Gender Equality report (February 2024), conducted on the initiative of the United Nations, there is still work to be done! Yara is one of the companies that has improved its practices towards fairness in pay, and is among 41 companies to do so, out of the total 3.795 companies surveyed in the Gender Equality Report and Ranking 2024 edition.

We went to Bandung together with Amartha to finally meet with the teams from Evermos. We were thrilled to share experiences and practical tips on translating Gender Equality Assessment Strategies and Results (GEARS) into concrete actions within companies. During our insightful discussions, we delved deep into creating a workplace that is safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for employees. Aria Widyanto, Director & CSRO at Amartha, shared invaluable tips on boosting employee engagement, such as providing space and opportunities for individuals to be themselves and voice their aspirations. Iqbal Muslimin, Co-Founder and Chief of Sustainability at Evermos seeks to uncover the most effective approaches and solutions in utilizing GEARS to promote gender equality within organizations. One of the most remarkable moments was when Aria emphasized the importance of giving female staff the chance to define empowerment on their terms. Finding common ground and turning those definitions into tangible actions that can be taken together is key. "Empowerment cannot be one size fits all, as everyone's definition may differ. The essence lies in the freedom to choose because, without the freedom to choose, one is not truly empowered." Promoting gender equality in the workplace requires serious and sustained commitment and investment, benefiting both workers and companies. However, a deep-rooted patriarchal culture fosters gender-biased perspectives, norms, and policies, continuing to be an obstacle to achieving this goal. According to Dwi Faiz, Head of Programs at UN Women Indonesia, "Unpaid care work, which poses a challenge for women to participate in the economy, often goes unnoticed. In fact, reducing unpaid care work has the potential to create almost 300 million jobs by 2035." Meanwhile, Zelda Lupsita, IBCWE (Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment) Program Manager, emphasized, "Companies must start with commitment from top management. They should review existing policies for inclusivity and carry out education for all employees to perceive the importance of gender equality in the workplace." Enforcing gender equality not only empowers female employees but also ensures equal rights, access, and opportunities for all workers. According to Wawan Suwandi, National Coordinator of the Aliansi Laki-laki Baru (ALB), "In the world of work, men do not need to feel ashamed of having an equal position with women. Working women are reliable partners and considering them inappropriate shows an inferior attitude." Gender-sensitive policies also encourage productivity, innovation, and employee performance, attracting new talent. Willy Salean, Director of Human Resources at Unilever Indonesia, stated, "For us, gender justice is an important pillar of a company. Implementing equity or justice in the work environment means building a healthy culture for talents from various backgrounds to develop equally." We had the privilege of participating in an insightful discussion alongside one of IBCWE's members, L’Oréal Indonesia. The discussion was graced by the presence of Ms. Cynthia Sanfilippo, Vice President of Global Public Affairs at L’Oréal Groupe, as well as key representatives from L’Oréal in the SAPMENA Zone, Ms. Hanh Nguyen and Ms. Snehhal Chitneni. This inclusive discussion also saw the involvement of the Yayasan Pemberdayaan Perempuan Kepala Keluarga (PEKKA). Together, we delved into several critical topics: 1️⃣ We discussed the current state of diversity and gender equality in Indonesia, covering crucial aspects such as employment access, equal pay, women in leadership roles, and government regulations. 2️⃣ We explored the challenges that lie ahead in our journey towards diversity and gender equality, including societal gender norms, sexual harassment, and violence. 3️⃣ We shed light on the impactful programs implemented by IBCWE, including our collaboration with L'Oréal Indonesia, which aims to drive positive changes in these areas. This discussion provided valuable perspectives from diverse backgrounds, representing both urban and rural contexts, on the status of women in Indonesia. It's through collaborative discussions like these that we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future.
