Should kids still be learning how to code? Emily Chang asked Sam Altman of OpenAI this critical question. Even though Sam isn't a teacher, his answer aligns well with early research, interviews, and teachers' beliefs in an upcoming release from TeachAI, in partnership with the Computer Science Teachers Association and the help of dozens of partners and thought leaders, called, "Guidance on the Future of Computer Science Education in an Age of AI." I'll post sneak peeks every day until the launch on July 16. The first question we tackle is, "Why is it Still Important for Students to Learn to Program?" Here are two of the points we make: - AI is not magic. It needs human expertise and guidance.  - AI can code, but there is more to programming than code. And here's Sam's answer: Emily Chang: “What do you think kids should be studying these days?” Sam Altman: “Resilience, adaptability, a high rate of learning, creativity, certainly familiarity with the tools.” Emily Chang: “So should kids still be learning how to code? ‘Cause I’ve heard people say, don’t need to learn how to code anymore. Just math, just biology.” Sam Altman: “Well, I’m biased ‘cause I like coding, but I think you should learn to code. I don’t write code very much anymore, although I randomly did yesterday. But learning to code was great as a way to learn how to think. And I think coding will still be important in the future. It’s just going to change a little bit or a lot. Happy to start my internship at TechnoHacks EduTech as a Machine Learning Engineer. Today I delved into the first task of predicting house prices. I deployed various machine learning techniques, XGB Regressor, and Gradient Boosting Regressor. Later applied skills I obtained from Kaggle on Feature Engineering. What if the most valuable skills for your child's future aren't taught in school? Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, believes kids need resilience, adaptability, and a high rate of learning to navigate the rapidly changing world shaped by AI. Remember that this individual has seen the roadmap for the AI products that OpenAI (and likely other companies) will release over the next few years. He anticipates the considerable change from technological innovation to impact our world's social, cultural, and work lives. Most schools focus on traditional curriculum rather than the mindset that you will need to adapt to a world that will change constantly, certainly a lot during their lifetime once they graduate. Some really great liberal arts programs focus on critical thinking skills and evidence-based reasoning. Still, they need to deal with more of the technical and algorithmic mindset that will be required to navigate technology and systems.
