Product Owner is not a job title. Let us end this misconception. When you divide the roles: Product Manager engages with the business and customers. Product Owner (dubbed as "backlog administrator") collaborates with developers, gathering and documenting requirements. For me, the most effective setup is when the Product Manager and Product Owner are one and the same, taking full end-to-end responsibility. Furthermore, it's crucial for the Product Manager, Product Designer, and at least one Engineer to collaborate on Product Discovery together. Product Owner is merely a role, while Product Manager is a title. The accountability of a Product Owner is best fulfilled by an experienced Product Manager. What do you think of this approach? As a Product Owner currently working on a long term vision for my product, I feel compelled to tell the product world that PO is not an entry-level role. We need to stop telling aspiring Product Managers to apply for PO roles as a segue to product management. Maybe it was true once upon a time. I know I used to believe it. Maybe back when companies could afford to hire a Product Owner, a Product Manager, and a Project Manager. For better or worse, most of us are currently performing all of these functions to some degree, regardless of our actual title. The old advice is no longer relevant. You should apply for a Product Owner role if: - You have prior experience as a Product Owner. - You have product manager/product owner experience without holding the official title & can prove it. - You already work for the company hiring a Product Owner and have excellent internal support and connections to recommend you. - The job description states that they are interested in applicants with different titles/experience or no previous Product Owner experience is required. Not trying to kill hope, just setting proper expectations. Read job posts thoroughly. Can you prove that you have done or can do at least 60% of that job? Apply smarter. #productowner #productmanagement

⁉Product Owners and Product Managers are just the same job with different titles⁉ ..... Which is where so many job specifications get it so wrong! And then companies wonder why over and under qualified people are 'easy applying' to their new Product role. How do you get it right? Step 1: Make sure the 'Job title', 'roles and responsibilities' and the 'experience' align. Step 2: Follow my easy guide on how to differentiate between what makes a Product Owner and what makes a Product Manager. Product Owner📄 🖍: - Think 'day to day' tasks- control of the backlog for developers, designers and testers alike. - Often involved with the delivery of the vision and the roadmap rather than the execution of it. - More delivery focused than discovery focused. - Define the user stories. - Makes sure the vision of the Product Manager is brought to life and the development team follows the roadmap to deliver this. - Production Owners are 'less senior' than a Product Manager and in a larger team, they will be reporting to a Product Manager or Senior Product Manager. Product Manager 💹 📊: - Thinking of the 'bigger picture', putting together a strategy, vision and roadmap to be executed by the development team. - They have to consider the end user experience and their needs, based on market research, data and direction of the company itself. - Establish a solid vision during Product discovery and adapting this to the needs of the company and the user based on developments and shifts in priority. - More senior member of the Product function, they would have Product owners reporting to them and would report to Senior Product Managers. Lead Product Managers or Heads of Product, depending on the size of the company. Hopefully this helps highlight the differences between the role you need to fill and the one you are actually advertising for!🕵♂️ (feel free to use for future reference).

Hiring a PO to manage the backlog is like buying a gamer PC to browse the internet. But then why is it listed in each and every job description of a Product Owner? My guess is that we all find comfort in a well defined, ‘clean’, almost testable process. Then, you can go to an annual performance review and actually look at the backlog. Was it managed or no? Yes? No? Choose one. #softwaredevelopment #productmanagement

🌟Why Product Management is Like Being a Superhero (Without the Cape) 🌟 Ever felt like a superhero in your day job? No? Well, clearly, you haven’t tried product management yet! 🦸♂️ Superpower #1: Mind-Reading PMs magically anticipate what users need before they even know it themselves. If only we could use this skill to predict the next big stock market trend! 📈 🦸♀️ Superpower #2: Time Travel We’re constantly living in the future, mapping out roadmaps and anticipating problems. And just like that, we're back in the present, fixing bugs and answering emails. 🚀📬 🦸♂️ Superpower #3: Multilingual Fluent in tech, business, and user-speak, all at once. Translating between developers who speak in code and stakeholders who speak in ROI metrics is our daily workout. 🧑💻📊 🦸♀️ Superpower #4: Negotiation Ninja Balancing the needs of customers, the demands of stakeholders, and the capacities of the dev team is like performing a high-wire act, but without the safety net. 🎪🤹 But let’s face it, even superheroes have their weaknesses. Ours? Trying to explain to our family what we do for a living! 😅 So, here’s to all the product managers out there, juggling priorities, fighting fires, and building the future one feature at a time. Keep wearing your invisible cape with pride! 🌟🦸♂️🦸♀️ #ProductManagement #OpentoWork

🚀When we say a product manager wears many hats, it's not just a casual statement – it's a testament to the multifaceted nature of this role. Being a successful product manager demands a diverse skill set that extends far beyond creating roadmaps and backlogs. ✅ Design Knowledge: A product manager must be knowledgeable in design to create an experience that users will love. This involves understanding user needs, market trends and balancing business objectives with user expectations. ✅Data Analysis: Product managers must be comfortable working with data to track user behaviour and ensure that the product solves real user problems. This includes analyzing different types of data, identifying patterns and insights, and using these findings to make informed decisions. ✅Digital Marketing: A product manager must know how to use the right language to sell the product to the right audience. This involves understanding digital marketing principles and effectively communicating the product's value to potential customers. ✅Collaboration with Developers and Engineers: Product managers must understand web development to collaborate with developers and engineers effectively. This includes understanding technical terminologies and being able to communicate product requirements effectively. 🚀 You don't have to be an expert in all these areas, but having a foundational understanding will help you stand out. Being a product manager isn't just about creating roadmaps and backlogs. 🚀 There's so much more to it; knowing all these aspects makes the role even more interesting and fulfilling. #productmanager #productmanagement #productdevelopment #mondaymotivation
