Recently, as in yesterday, I learnt of the sheer volume of phrases in use that are originally nautical terms. 🚤 At loggerheads - An iron ball attached to a long handle was a loggerhead. When heated it was used to seal the pitch in deck seams. It was sometimes a handy weapon for quarrelling crewmen. 🚤 Fits the bill - A Bill of Lading was signed by the ship’s master acknowledging receipt of specified goods and the promise to deliver them to their destination in the same condition. Upon delivery, the goods were checked against the bill to see if all was in order. If so, they fit the bill. 🚤 Taken aback - A dangerous situation where the wind is on the wrong side of the sails pressing them back against the mast and forcing the ship astern. Most often this was caused by an inattentive helmsman who had allowed the ship to head up into the wind. 🚤 Turn a blind eye - From Admiral Lord Nelson’s awesome display of badassery at the Battle of Copenhagen. When the signal was given to stop fighting, Nelson held his spyglass to his blind eye and insisted he didn’t see the signal. 🚤 Windfall - A sudden unexpected rush of wind from a mountainous shore which allowed a ship more leeway. So, if you find yourself 𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴 with your current role, and are looking for something that 𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘭, don't be 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 or 𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘢 𝘣𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘺𝘦 to new opportunities, there's a 𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 coming! Awful puns aside, there's a range of vacancies I'm currently supporting clients with that don't require you to get on a boat.....and one that does 📞 07917434935 📩 tom@consultsearch.co.uk Consult

In a Marine All Risks policy the loss is deemed to be covered if the insured proves the extent of the loss and the fact that the loss had occurred during transit. Unless the insurer is able to prove that the loss has taken place before or after the transit. The burden of proof is always on the insurer. However, there can be two types of scenarios. Damages inside a container or a package- this can be resolved by the concealed damage clause with a stipulation of time limit for the discovery of the loss. The other more contentious issue is that of pilferage from a container with seals being intact- commonly known as the skilful pilferage. This is also payable if the loss is intimated within time. But, the insured will have to prove that the loss has occurred. This becomes problematic. The solution is to be obtain non- delivery certificate from the carrier which is very difficult as the carrier will not be able to defend his case. The other solution is to have pre+despatch and post delivery surveys conducted regularly which may not be practically feasible.
Thus spake a learned marine cargo surveyor: “Refer to our discussions on the captioned claim and providing the weighment details of the xxxx containers. The containers were externally sound and seals intact condition, hence the shortages in these containers is not due to any fortuity in transit.” I don’t know if I’m Rip Van Winkle just woken up, since when has marine surveyors started asking insured to prove the fortuity in respect of shortage losses? Mere arrival with seals intact means absence of fortuity? Deliver me, O Lord!

"... I counted them all out , and I counted them all back." Every time I reach the end of a contract there's a moment I inevitably think of Brian Hanrahan reporting from HMS Hermes in 1982. He was talking about Harrier Jump Jets, I've only been counting karabiners. It's my last full day at sea here and the equipment manifest is complete - All present and correct! Nothing missing in action. One thing that's crucial on any rope access job, but especially on a maritime asset such as this production platform, is to ensure that EVERYTHING you use for your workscope is accounted for and, if appropriate, returned to 'the beach'. An hour at the start of each contract and one at the end prior to de-mobbing makes sure that there's no climbing equipment left hanging somewhere creating a Potential Dropped Object. I'm very much looking forward to the Client Feedback from this trip, I always do, which come from this afternoon's meeting. I encourage positive feedback of course, but also ask for anything negative as part of my ongoing quest for 100% customer satisfaction as we strive to improve and impress everywhere we work. ✌🏻🙂👍🏻🥇 RIP Brian (22 March 1949 – 20 December 2010), you were very good at your job and & well respected by your peers. www.orcaaccessservices.com E: info@orcaaccessservices.com T: +44 1246 267577 #chopperseve #offshore #oilandgas #oilandgasindustry #ropeaccess #ropeaccessprofessional #irata #iratainternational #inspectionservices #loler #liftingequipment #cranesafety #cranes #workatheight #accesssolutions #maritime #maritimeindustry #maritimesafety #northsea #visualinspection #safetyatwork #safetyfirst #inspection

Marine casualty investigation, including a stability assessment of a sunken motor vessel ⚓ 🚢 Following the total loss of a small general cargo ship, we were entrusted by the Owners to model the vessel and determine the root cause of the sinking. Our approach involved, document review, 3D modelling, crew interviews, consideration of weather conditions, and analysis of other pertinent factors. The limited yet crucial photos available from the salvors were instrumental in validating our model. This represents just one facet of the multidisciplinary approach our Team can undertake. We firmly believe in the effectiveness of our design and consultancy services, offering multidisciplinary solutions in various maritime scenarios. Connect with us to discover how our swift response, proactive approach, and extensive experience can benefit your specific needs!
