The world is filled with incredible renewable energy potential. Every year, the sun 🌞 provides about 1,500,000 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy, and the wind 🌬️adds another 3,500,000 TWh. To give you an idea, in 2022, the whole world used around 158,000 TWh of energy. This means that solar power alone could meet our global energy needs about 9,500 times over, and wind power could cover it 22 times. 🌍✨ However, there's a challenge: solar and wind energy aren't always available when we need them. The sun doesn’t shine all the time, and the wind doesn’t always blow. An also the "capacity factor" comes in to add more challenges – it measures how often these energy sources are producing at full power. Solar power works at about 15-25% of its maximum potential, and wind power at about 25-45%. 🌤️💨 To make up for this, we need strong energy storage solutions to save excess energy and use it when needed. In 2023, the global energy storage market nearly TRIPLED, thanks to lower costs and better technology. 🚀🔋 Let’s keep pushing for innovation and investment in energy storage to build a sustainable and reliable future. 💡🌱 #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #WindEnergy #Sustainability #Innovation #CleanEnergy

The development of renewable energies in Spain: an opportunity to revitalize the Spanish industrial sector? 📃 Based on the endorsement of the National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) update by the European Commission and its imminent approval by the national government, Spain's electricity demand is forecast to remain relatively stable until 2030 compared to the current situation. However, a substantial increase in gross installed capacity is expected, particularly in renewable energy, aiming to constitute 81% of the total capacity by 2030. 🌐 With this surplus in mind, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) envisions a significant boost in energy exports, projecting an increase from 11,859 GWh in 2019 to 63,010 GWh in 2030. Notably, energy exports to France are expected to quadruple by that year, directly colliding with French objectives. 🚨Despite the promising prospects, there are challenges associated with the export strategy, primarily due to limited neighboring countries (France, Portugal, Morocco, and Andorra) and the limited prospect of growth of interconnection grids. Additionally, France, the most industrialized neighbor with the highest energy demand, consistently opposes expanding its electricity exchange capacity. Two additional solutions are proposed in order to leverage the expected green energy surplus: - Energy Storage. 🏭 Industry Attraction: Attracting industries to Spanish soil, leveraging the reduced energy prices resulting from the present and future development of renewable energies, their accessibility for industrial investment and its potentiality. The latter point has gained traction among experts such as Daniel Pérez Rodríguez, as outlined in his book "La superpotencia renovable", and Sara Aagesen, Secretary of State for Energy, who emphasized this perspective in a recent event at the Ateneo de Madrid. ⭐ Spain, with its unique advantages to implement renewable projects, including underpopulated territories like "Empty Spain," stands at a crossroads to position itself as an attractive destination for industries seeking to benefit from the increasing availability of cost-effective and accessible renewable energies. This strategic advantage places Spain ahead of potential competitors, with only offshore wind from the North Sea posing a real challenge to Spanish solar photovoltaic and onshore wind capabilities within the country. ⚡ Realizing this new opportunity to boost the industrial sector in Spain will depend on the emergence of leadership that is firmly convinced of the attainability of these objectives. #energy #transicionenergetica #renovables #PNIEC

⚡ This evening, energy prices in Spain are projected to hit a new high of €220/MWh, surpassing last year's peak. ---- It's crucial to note that these energy price peaks occur from 5:00 to 6:00 in the morning and from 20:00 to 21:00 in the evening, precisely when solar energy contribution is basically at zero. The challenge we confront isn't just about production; it's also about when we consume energy. While virtual batteries are gaining traction, they only offer a short term solution (look at what happened in the Netherlands). After all, the energy we consume during the dark hours isn't entirely sustainable. Following the recent successful round of European Grants to accelerate the energy transition, I anticipate substantial investments in local residential storage units (and, hopefully, bi-directional EV chargers). "Will this be the only time prices rise again?" We hope not! However, in the world of energy, hope can be a dangerous thing.

Renewable energy sources, particularly Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE), played a significant role in Chile’s electricity generation, reaching a record high of 41.3% in the first quarter of 2024. This underscores Chile’s commitment to sustainable energy and reducing reliance on conventional sources. The growth was primarily driven by solar energy, with a notable contribution from small hydroelectric plants. However, the challenge remains in improving transmission infrastructure to ensure efficient distribution of this energy across the country and globally, highlighting the importance of investments in transmission infrastructure. Despite advancements, the outcome for 2024 will be influenced by factors such as rainfall patterns, which can impact the contribution of hydroelectric power. Nonetheless, Chile’s continued emphasis on renewable energy development, with numerous projects underway, signals a positive trajectory towards a more sustainable energy future.
