Geospatial professionals take on multiple roles - cartographer, surveyor, technical specialist. Now add hiker 🥾to the list too! Recently, a team of SLA officers and experts from the Earth Observatory of Singapore trekked up to a remote reference station for essential maintenance, ensuring it continues to work perfectly so that critical applications relying on #SiReNT can continue to run smoothly 🌐 These stations provide precise location data, accurate to mere centimetres to guide apps, robots and construction technologies 📐 But did you know it is the only station out of SiReNT’s network of 10 stations across Singapore that is an inaccessible location, perched atop a hill in challenging terrain and off public trails? Meet Peiwen, a member of the SLA geomatics team who spearheads geospatial and mapping projects. Off work, she is also one of the pioneer members of Singapore’s women's National Beach Handball team. She recollects one of her proudest moments when the team punched above its weight to triumph against other, more established teams. "The sports take my mind off work and nudge me to recognise my personal strengths and weaknesses, both physically and mentally.” When asked how she balances work with her commitment to the rigorous training schedule, she shared the importance of having supportive colleagues who allow her the flexibility to plan her training around her work deliverables. The heritage bungalows at 31, 31A, and 33 Scotts Road welcomed prospective tenderers who were interested in participating in the tender for the trio of properties at a recent showround, as an opportunity to take a closer look at the State properties that will be repurposed for creative lifestyle uses. Our colleagues led the visitors on a tour, explained its key features, and answered questions on the tenders, giving the attendees a better glimpse into its possibilities for rejuvenation. 🌐✨ Counting down to the Esri User Conference in mid-July! As part of the annual conference that convenes global geospatial experts, the invitation-only National Executive Geospatial Forum will take place on 13 July in San Diego, California, where geospatial authorities will uncover insights, monitor change, and create initiatives and policies to shape a more sustainable and resilient future. In a user presentation titled ‘Using Data and Technology to Collaborate’, SLA Director of Geospatial and Data Siau Yong NG 黄晓勇 will present on Singapore’s Living Asset Map—an innovative geo-enabled platform that has transformed preventive healthcare through social prescribing. By aggregating geospatial and community-based data to show mapped assets, the map supports healthcare providers and community partners in connecting their patients with suitable opportunities to enhance their well being. Sharing the stage with Omar Alriyami from Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi and Paulo Madeira from eBUPi - Estrutura de Missão para a Expansão do Cadastro Simplificado / Digital Land Registry, the presentation aims to unlock the power of geographic thinking to address diverse societal issues. 🚴♂️🚴♀️Trading in our office shoes with cycling shoes sure was a new ‘spin’ on how to end the work week! Some of our SLA colleagues took to spin bikes as part of our SaLsA committee’s Sports Monthly series of physical activities, aimed at fostering team bonding and giving staff a chance to try new activities. Under the flashing lights and pulsing tunes, we were spurred on by the determination of our colleagues and instructors to end the session on a high together. It was a heartwarming moment to see everyone moving to the beat as one and pushing through the pain, with some first-time riders in the session too.
