Today we mark the Day of the Seafarer, a United Nations observance day to recognise the vital contributions made by seafarers to international seaborne trade, and in keeping the world's economy afloat. How do seafarers navigate both waves and work every day? To commemorate this day, we went onboard one of our Ubuntu vessels to experience a day in the life of a seafarer, and to understand the complexities of their job and the maritime challenges. International Seafarers Day, let's spend a minute to be aware of this: "The Day of the Seafarer is a time to celebrate and recognize the two million people around the world who operate the ships that carry more than 80% of the volume of world trade. Seafarers are vital in ensuring a seamless flow of essential goods that eventually make it into markets, homes, and onto our tables. Without them, the world would not be able to transport the large quantities of commodities that societies require to survive. But their own lives have been put on the line in the face of grave threats. Attacks on international shipping routes and acts of piracy are unacceptable. Ships and seafarers must not be held hostage and hijacked. Seafarers should not be collateral victims in wider geopolitical conflicts. Seafarers from across the globe provide a vital source of income to their families back home, while on long voyages at sea. Let us together salute them for their essential work and support their safety." ~UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres #safetytipsatsea #Seafarers #IMO

Today, we celebrate the incredible men and women who sail the world's oceans, making global trade possible and connecting communities across continents. As a former seafarer myself, I have firsthand experience of the dedication, resilience, and hard work it takes to keep the maritime industry moving. Seafarers play a crucial role in ensuring that goods and resources reach their destinations safely and efficiently. They face the challenges of long voyages, unpredictable weather, and time away from their loved ones, all to keep the global economy afloat. Without them, the shelves in our stores would be empty, and our economies would grind to a halt. To all the seafarers out there, thank you for your unwavering commitment and the sacrifices you make. Your contributions are invaluable, and today, we honor and appreciate you. Let’s take a moment to recognize the importance of seafarers in our daily lives and support initiatives that improve their working conditions and well-being. 🌍❤️ #DayOfTheSeafarer #Seafarers #GlobalTrade #MaritimeIndustry #SeafarerLife #ThankYouSeafarers #Community #GlobalEconomy

The role of seafarers often goes under-appreciated within the maritime industry and by the general public. Seafarers are an essential component in world trade, keeping the economy moving and delivering the goods and fuels we use every day. Wishing you a happy Day of the Seafarer.

I’m looking for maritime businesses and organisations that wish to connect with the next-gen of seafarers through digital marketing.
In 2023, I lived in the Philippines and had the opportunity to interview hundreds of seafarers. One consistent theme that stood out was the unimaginable events many experienced seafarers had been through - from encounters with pirates and challenging weather to incidents of sinking ships. These experiences were truly breathtaking. The maritime industry must give these unsung heroes their well-deserved appraisal. As someone from the corporate world, I acknowledge that most of us cannot fully comprehend the sacrifices made by seafarers. It's essential to recognise that without seafarers, there would be no shipping - emphasising the critical role they play in keeping the industry and our global economy afloat. NOTE : Notice the second seafarers eyes when he describes how strong the gail weather was. #seafarers #shipping #maritime #merchantnavy #philippines #cadet #crew

The Day of the Seafarer serves as a global tribute to the hard work and sacrifices of seafarers in driving the world economy forward. This day is a significant occasion to honour the vital role that seafarers play in facilitating international trade and ensuring the smooth functioning of the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), established this event to emphasize the importance of maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. With a specific theme chosen each year, the Day of the Seafarer sheds light on the various aspects of seafarers' lives, challenges, and overall well-being. IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2024 is "Navigating the future: safety first!" Through this annual observance, the focus is not only on acknowledging the professionalism and dedication of seafarers but also on addressing the issues they encounter in their line of work. It encourages individuals and organizations to express gratitude for the contributions of seafarers and to advocate for initiatives that enhance their welfare and uphold their rights.
