Turkish Steel Giant Eyes $5 Billion Investment in Saudi Arabia Turkish steelmaker Tosyalı Holding plans to invest as much as $5 billion in a #steel plant in #SaudiArabia, part of an expansion spree that includes #Algeria, #Angola, #Senegal and #Spain. The company recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia, chairman Fuat Tosyalı said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday. The comments come two weeks after the firm announced it bought Spain’s #Baika Steel Tubular Systems SL for an undisclosed price. “Our aim is to make the best quality steel from the best technology in a sustainable, efficient and carbon-neutral way,” Fuat Tosyali said. As part of its plans to produce steel from #green #energy sources, the company aims to increase its #solar output by more than 10 folds to 2,500 megawatts from 240 megawatts through a $1.5 billion investment, Tosyali said. There are also plans to buy a stake in a major #hydrogen #energy company to adapt that technology to steel plants, he added, without giving any details. Tosyali, which aims to raise its #revenue to more than $7 billion this year from $5 billion in 2023, will increase its steel production #capacity to 14 million tons a year as investments in Algeria and Turkey reach fruition, the chairman said. ~Cement Demand in Saudi Arabia 2024~ Cement demand in Saudi Arabia is forecast to advance by three per cent in 2024 in terms of volumes, compared to a decline of eight per cent in 2023, reports Aljazira Capital. The first 11 months of 2023 saw local dispatches fall to around 43Mt, marking a 7.4 per cent contraction YoY, mainly driven by weak construction activity in the housing sector. Going forward, demand is expected to come primarily from the construction of giga projects, fuelled by government spending. According to Aljazira Capital, in the 1H23, Saudi Arabia accounted for 44 per cent, or US$44bn, of the total US$101bn of projects awarded in the MENA region, along with around 35 per cent of the estimated US$3trn total value of the project pipeline in the region. Hosting Expo 2030 and the potential for a 2034 FIFA World Cup are expected to boost cement demand in Saudi Arabia in the coming years, along with an upturn in demand from the private sector on the back of predicted cuts in interest rates. Exciting News from Egypt! The Egyptian Company for Metal Constructions (Metalco) is planning to build a state-of-the-art aluminium smelter to cater to the local and foreign markets. The CEO of Metalco, Mohammed Al-Saadawi, revealed that the company is in negotiations with a potential partner for this ambitious 600,000-tonne project, which is estimated to require an investment of $2.7 billion. Metalco is currently studying two possible sites for the smelter, including the Northern Port Said and the "Golden Triangle" economic zone on the Eastern Red Sea flank of Egypt. With an agreement for the project expected to be reached soon, Al-Saadawi expressed confidence in securing funding, stating that there are many ways to finance the project. The Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Abubakar Audu has disclosed that President Tinubu has approved the restart of the light section mill at the Ajaokuta complex, with a seed capital of N35 billion from a private financial institution. The light section mill of Ajaokuta Steel will supply around 400,000 metric tonnes of iron rods to the Ministry of Works for road construction across Nigeria upon completion. There are so many roads that are being constructed across the country, about 30,000km roads across the six geopolitical zones. The ministry of works needs about 7 million metric tonnes of iron rods over 4 years period to construct the 30,000 km of roads and Ajaokuta can produce 400,000 metric tonnes which is a drop in the ocean of what is required. The complex has the capacity to produce all the required steels the country needs, it inability to function has caused Nigeria to become an import-dependent country when it comes to steel. A cement company in Saudi Arabia: Monetizing a billion-dollar land The Evli Emerging Frontier Fund recently invested in a $1.5b cement producer in Saudi Arabia. The company benefits from an exceptionally strong long-term demand outlook in light of the massive pipeline of megaprojects in Saudi Arabia along with the construction activities for the Expo 2030 and 2034 FIFA World Cup. The largest domestic cement producer, this business has been growing output capacity in the last few years by installing highly efficient brand new production lines made in Germany. Its modern plant also uses clean energy as opposed to diesel, which helped the company benefit from the enormous recent diesel price hike of 53% which affected its diesel-driven competitors and thus triggered cement prices to increase over 40% in the past month. However, what makes us most excited about this company is that it owns a land in Riyadh that is larger in size than New York's Central Park and is valued at over 1 billion USD.
