Greetings from a stormy Cape Town, South Africa 🇿🇦 ⛈️ The Cape of Storms is living up to its reputation BUT more frequently and with higher intensity. For those that follow my posts, I shared a similar update in terms of the apocalyptic wind and fires a few short months ago; now we have flooding, snow and high winds. What does this mean for coastal towns? Coastal areas have been hard hit by sea storms, tropical cyclones (eastern side of Africa), heatwaves, rising sea levels, rough seas, cut-off lows, wildfires, coastal and fluvial flooding (where rivers burst their banks). In terms of some meteorological geekiness🤓…the increased intensity of tropical and mid-latitude cyclones (intense rainfall, wind and high tides) has caused severe damage to coastal infrastructure in South Africa’s coastal provinces, which are significantly impacting livelihoods and commerce. One of my biggest passions is cycling, and I have been following the Tour de France since 1998 (the worlds biggest and most prestigious cycling race) which happens every July 🗓️ One of my heroes over the years has been Sir Mark Cavendish (The Manx Missile🚀), a sprinter! Without getting into to much detail, Cavendish has set a new world record this year surpassing the great Eddy Merchx with 35 stage wins spanning 15 Tour de France’s 🇫🇷 This achievement, one in which Deloitte has been part of during Cavendish’s career, is a testament to perseverance, overcoming the odds, fighting defeat, illness and playing to your strengths. Another dramatic F1 incident in Austria 🇦🇹 McLaren Racing’s Norris and Red Bull’s Verstappen collided in the closing stages of the race. In the blink of an eye a race winning move was impacted by the actions of another driver. It is in these instances that data analytics play a crucial role whereby such incidents have been modelled in advance which predict the optimal contingency and corrective actions. Extreme weather events are happening more often and with greater intensity! Maybe you are noticing this within your respective location? South Africa is currently experiencing a significant storm (Level 6 in parts of the country) which is damaging #infrastructure, causing strain on local economies, causing #environmental and #social impact at scale 🌧️ In picture; some of the scenes from Eastern Cape where a tornado struck just a few hours before (let me put it this way, South Africa does not experience tornadoes as a norm, even remotely)🌪️ #climatechange is affecting the globe in many ways, but just a month or two back we had severe apocalyptic weather in Cape Town with wind speeds over 120km/h with severe urban fires 🔥 How do we go about building and maintaining more resilient infrastructure when the effects of climate change are so overwhelming, especially in at-risk communities? #climaterisk #resilience #extremeweather #sustainability
