Has anyone else noticed Asda's change in messaging recently? In recent weeks I have noticed Asda going after M&S. Leaning into a taste test and price message. Instead of following Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's with price matches against Aldi, they seem to be aiming for the premium end. Are Asda seeing a chance to grab the M&S buyer with the cost of living? Are they trying to improve the perception of Asda as being cheaper/poor tasting? It's an interesting change. Maybe this has been the case for some time and I'm only just noticing. Both Marks and Spencer (LSE:MKS) and J Sainsbury's PLC (LSE:SBRY) have announced a new round of price cuts as they look to win back market share from discounters Aldi UK and Lidl GB Sainsbury’s brought the total items part of its Aldi price match to over 550 this month, while almost 6,000 products can now be bought cheaper with Nectar points. This means the UK’s second-largest supermarket invested £220 million into lowering prices over the financial year and £780 million over the last three years. Products like croissants, baby wipes and minced meat have all been added to the Aldi price match scheme, with ingredients for a prawn and courgette pasta dropping by close to a pound this month. Sainsburys Biggest ever Aldi Price Match campaign – over 400 items As the cost-of-living challenges continue, Sainsbury’s remains completely focused on providing excellent value on the products that customers buy most often. From 23rd August, Sainsbury’s has added over 40 products to its Aldi Price Match campaign, making it the biggest yet with over 400 products. Additions include a range of by Sainsbury’s soups; burger buns and bread for those late summer BBQs; and sweet treats like Bramley Apple Pies. Food inflation is starting to slow, and Sainsbury’s is fully committed to passing on savings to customers. With the price of butter continuing to come down, the retailer has cut the price of its by Sainsbury's British Butter 250g by 10% since May – now £1.79. Supermarket shopping.   We have the radio on at work and I have just heard the news that Morrisons are the latest supermarket to start matching prices with Aldi and Lidl.   If they are able to do this, have they been over charging us before price matching?   Recruiting in the food manufacturing industry we know how and what care goes into our food from the start of the process. What will price matching mean to the bigger supermarkets? Will they have to offer less choice than they currently do like Aldi and Lidl do?   It may not mean any change at all it’s just got me thinking.   I’ve shopped at Aldi for the last few years. Why? It is the most convenient for me. I do a top up shop from Tesco if I need one but I find that I need this less these days as Aldi are getting more of the things I want in. (Just my fussy cats will not eat their food so have to still get that from Tesco!)   Where do you do your food shop and why do you choose the supermarket you go to? I am interested to know what people look for.

Carrefour grocery stores in Europe are pulling PepsiCo products from the shelves, the first sign of stores fighting back against inflation. Due to “unacceptable price increases” the France-based superstore announced it will no longer carry PepsiCo products like Fritos, Lays, Cheetos, and Gatorade across 9,000 of its stores in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium. Despite claims that these price hikes are necessary to combat inflation, make no mistake Carrefour is seeing the same thing we all are: food prices are going up, packaging is getting smaller, and food company profits are through the roof. Pepsi experienced record profits increasing their net income increased by 16.9% in 2022 to nearly $9 billion. Coca Cola grew its gross profit by 12% according to a Q3 2023 report, and even Kraft-Heinz reported a gross profit of over $6.6 billion for the year, a 15% jump from the year before. Carrefour is saying no more – how very French – but the question is when will American grocery stores do the same?
