We've given our first interview to Billboard Magazine 📰 ✏ Representing Unmute // Sonic Branding Agency I was asked about AI, jingles and how we see #sonicbranding has changed the ad music landscape. Turned out to be an interesting discussion with Steve Knopper about the current and future state of the advertising music/audio industry. New Post: Will the Next Country Hit Be Made Online? - https://lnkd.in/gj-knFan - Last July, more than 70 country songwriters and producers filtered into Sony Music Publishing’s Nashville office to hear a presentation from Beatstars, the popular website that allows artists to buy or lease full instrumentals for their own use. Seth Mosley, whose recent co-writes include songs recorded by Tim McGraw and Gabby Barrett, was in attendance that day, and he was compelled by the company’s pitch. He started posting beats on the platform regularly in December, hoping it could provide him with a new income stream — and another source of exposure. But this way of working is unusual in country music. Beatstars was initially popularized by rappers and singers in R&B and pop, genres where it’s common for vocalists to use a fully-formed track as a jumping-off point. Music-making in Nashville is often more traditional, with ace session musicians recording in revered studios — a world away from the fast-moving online beat economy. Related Every Country Music Record Broken on the Hot 100 in 2023: From Morgan Wallen to Oliver Anthony… 09/05/2023 With time, though, Beatstars’ success stories have become more varied, spreading to realms that were once ruled by bands playing instruments. ThxSoMch and Wisp found post-punk and neo-shoegaze instrumentals, respectively, on the platform, added their own vocals, and scored breakout moments and major-label deals. And country could be the next frontier. Beatstars is noticing heightened interest in the genre as it surges in the U.S., says Greg Mateo, the platform’s president of music and publishing. In Mosley’s six months on Beatstars, he’s learned that “anything that’s got a Morgan Wallen spin to it is in high demand.” That demand is growing on other music-making platforms as well. Bandlab, a mobile music creation app that now has more than 100 million users, has also seen excitement for country elevate in the U.S., according to CEO Meng Ru Kuok. On top of that, statistics from Splice, which provides producers with a massive library of samples, indicate that its 8 million-strong user base is incorporating country flavors with greater frequency this year. User searches for “country” have more than doubled compared to 2023. And their interest in samples of instruments associated with the genre has soared, including banjo (searches are up 75%), mandolin (66%), pedal steel (113%) and fiddle (131%). Could this be the pivotal moment for music….. "TikTok and Billboard Partner to Launch the 'TikTok Billboard' Top 50 Chart." This trend could be a positive force for new breakthrough artists, propelling their music to new heights, or it could potentially overshadow other deserving talents with industry plants. 🤔 I just hope this collaboration doesn't shift the industry's focus even further towards soundbites and quirky samples, continuing to dilute the essence of music. https://lnkd.in/eV3TSz-y #MusicIndustry #DigitalMarketing #TikTokTrends #SocialMedia

As something Virgin Active has recently become painfully aware of, the importance of having a music strategy aligned with your brand and the expectations of your customers is crucial. Here's me talking to Transform magazine about how brands can leverage it and why it differs to sonic branding.
Why we can't ignore the emergence of ‘music strategy’ 👉 https://bit.ly/4dp3ean Global creative strategy and innovation director at MassiveMusic and Songtradr, Roscoe Williamson discusses sonic branding’s “rather underappreciated cousin,” music strategy, and how utilising it can increase brand recall. 🗣 "This involves a curatorial tone of voice for all the music a brand uses but does not own. This includes stock, production and commercial music tracks used for advertising, content, events, social engagement, in-product, in-store, showrooms and other forms of internal music." #branding #brand #rebrand #design #strategy #transformmagazine

I've been to 2 watch parties in the past week - Eurovision Song Content at Everyman cinema and Google I/O hosted by REAS Group. It got me wondering how long it will be before AI generated music will be a winner at the Eurovision. Out of many announcements by Google, was the one about Music AI Sandbox, where Google has been partnering with those in the music industry to build a product to enhance the song writing process. Rather than full AI-generated music, in this process the tech is used to help musicians speed up the process of songwriting, with the ability to quickly generate different variations of sounds. This is probably the big question about AI. Will it replace human roles or help us to achieve more? What are your thoughts? #ai #music #technology

The Music Industry Takes on AI 🎶🤖 In a significant development, record labels Universal, Sony, and Warner have filed a lawsuit against two AI music generators, alleging that their catalogs have been ripped off. The twist? It remains unclear if the courts will side with the record labels. This case underscores the growing tension between AI innovation and intellectual property rights in the music industry. ⚖️ As AI continues to evolve, it challenges traditional industries and raises important questions about copyright, creativity, and innovation. This lawsuit could set a precedent for how AI-generated content is regulated and protected, impacting not just the music industry but also other creative fields. Pathfinder for Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Talent Management | Innovation | Human Capital Management | Data Engineering | Labor Economics
Unpopular opinion: The uproar from the music industry against AI might be more about gatekeeping than genuine concern for creativity and earnings. First off, let's address the elephant in the room: many top-tier musicians are already financially secure, to say the least. The argument that AI is pilfering from their coffers seems a bit overstretched. Moreover, if we break down music to its core, it's fundamentally a series of patterns in rhythm and rhyme - there's a limit to its originality. This brings us to another point: a lot of modern music tends to blend into a single, indistinct wave of auto-tuned vocals and recycled beats. Is the fear of AI really about protecting originality, or is it about something else?AI in music represents a democratizing force, offering fresh ideas and opportunities, and potentially leveling the playing field in an industry that's notoriously difficult to break into. It's about time we embraced tools that can introduce new voices and perspectives, rather than clinging to a status quo that favors a select few. And let's be honest, with the prevalence of ghostwriters, auto-tune, and other production tricks, the line between 'authentic' music and AI-generated content is already blurrier than many would like to admit. What if AI could actually enhance creativity, rather than stifle it? It's worth a conversation, at least. https://lnkd.in/gMCiESwi

From the New Yorker, an interesting look at how AI is disrupting the music industry, and how one veteran - Lucian Grainge, the chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group - is trying to reap the benefits of the technology without sacrificing copyright. I am looking at this issue more in my computer science class, ‘Twenty-First Century Electronic and Computer Music Techniques’ and also doing some personal research on the convergence of music and AI. https://lnkd.in/ePH_SCPM
