Transformation and turnarounds in pharma are complex. The industry presents unique challenges and opportunities. From a consultant’s standpoint, there are a few specific areas that need attention to be successful in a transformation: Stakeholder alignment - Ensure that everyone, from the C-suite to the factory floor, is on board with the transformation. This requires information, explanation, and top-to-bottom commitment. Define teams, process KPIs and governance and make sure everyone is aware how project will be run Make technology and data your strength. Leveraging technology and updating legacy systems will make any transformation easier and smoother. Financial discipline is paramount. This requires cutting costs where necessary and investing in areas that will deliver growth. Regulatory compliance at every stage is mandatory. This one seems straightforward but you don't want to do all this work only to discover you’ve run afoul of the law. Communicate while executing, you want to share success, be open about what is happening… the organization is not silly, they are all aware that some painful decision need to be taken, but in general they appreciate honesty and transparency. The cost-benefit paradigm of digital innovation for "non-revenue maker departments"... In our constant (and darn fast) journey of corporate digital innovation, we often focus on the cost-benefit analysis, with the primary driver being increased profit for the organization. But what about departments or functions that primarily represent a cost for the company? How do we justify investing in resource-intensive activities like digitalization? Consider the patient safety and pharmacovigilance department of any MAH (marketing authorization holder) aiming for organic and sustainable growth. We could pitch digitalization to finance as a profit-increasing opportunity, focusing on potential mid-term (3-5 years) human capital cost savings due to process automation. But what if we shift our approach? What if we highlight the benefits of efficiency and efficacy, such as improved quality, streamlined SOPs enabling mid-management to harmonize the workforce shortly after implementation, and reducing routine tasks to allow employees to focus on more challenging, intellectually stimulating work? The more I converse with seasoned professionals (mainly listening 😅), the more I believe that our strategy to support the inevitable technological adaptation in high-performing PV departments should emphasize overall improvement as a gain of market share via supreme reputation, lean and efficient operation procedures, and last (but for sure not least!) increased market trust delivering the highest standard of patient safety.
