I am not quite sure if I am qualified to comment on the efficiency benefits that adoption of technology will give to shift workers. Platforms like Deputy are no doubt designed to do that. Here's my spontaneous response: Having a daughter who works in Intensive Care for extended hours, both nights and days, I can say working in shifts impacts the quality of life of millions of people in terms of upsetting their biorhythms, circadian cycles, appetite, digestion, physical performance and mental functions including reaction times, etc etc. The long term impact on their health and well-being is huge. If technology (including AI) can provide a better understanding of and insight into these effects, and work towards reducing their work hours, providing appropriate breaks, allowing longer recovery times etc, THAT I think would be of real value to shift workers. Forget four day weeks for the rest of us. Remember to give shift workers a more restful week.

It's often said that Australian startup founders generally don't think they should tackle global problems — they leave it up to Americans and Europeans instead. Silvija Martincevic, the American-based CEO of newly-minted Australian tech unicorn Deputy — whose software is used by millions around the world — argues otherwise. I caught up with her recently to learn how Deputy became a surprise unicorn amid a tech downturn, and to ask for her observations on Australia's startup and tech sector. "If you're a CEO in the US, the market is so massive that you don't need to start your business by thinking about how to expand globally. But for any tech CEO in Australia that wants to build a business of meaningful size, you've got to think globally from day one," she told me. "It's not an easy challenge to solve, but that quality in Australian founders for me has been really impressive". Last week I was working with a large New Zealand employer. They identified that while they were doing great culture change work in their head office location, the workers outside the big city didn't necessarily have the same knowledge or advantages. This has been a common theme in the organisations I have worked for throughout my career. They always have two types of workforces: 1. The 'corporate' workforces who sit at desks and work on computers in offices. These workers have benefited from technology advancements to be productive. These people have also benefited from ongoing changes to workplace cultures that have allowed them to access wider employment and leadership opportunities. 2. The second type of workforces are those undertaking shift work, which are largely physical in nature. Warehouse and manufacturing workers, healthcare workers, contruction workers and so on. I worked in retail for many years early in my career and can attest to have challenging this work can be. These groups of people have less access to AI and other technologies that improve their work production. They also tend to have less access to enhanced work opportunities because of this. Big congratuations to CEO of Deputy, Silvija Martincevic for becoming the first Australian tech unicorn since the tech downturn in 2022. She is working to improve tech outcomes for shift workers. A very interesting article here from the #LinkedInNewsAustralia team and it should make influential leaders in the technology sector think deeply about how the democratisation of technology can benefit individuals and organisations alike. For me the following issues come to mind: 💡 We are fortunate to be in an era where technology is advancing at hyper speed and its important we bring as many of our communities and employees on the journey with us. 💡 Technology is an enabler to learning & development that should be available to all. That is how we bring people on this exciting journey with us as we adopt AI into mainstream lives and activities, make people aware of the importance of cyber security and evolve the thought of lifelong learning. 💡 The future use cases of technology is only as good as our innovation allows and in my view innovation comes from humans. It is our innate traits that enable to challenge the status quo and have critical thinking that solves problems. Technology is the enabler. It is therefore imperative we advance technology to the many and not the few. 💡 If we want to advance productivity at both an organisational and personal level then we can do that by making advances in technology available in a more democratic manner. The latest Flex report is out! Great work to Rob Sadow and Flex Index team. Here are my personal takeaways: 1. Forced RTO will be Return to Obsolescence in the long term. 2. Flexible work is and will be here to stay. For smaller and new age companies, remote work works well. This was the case pre-pandemic in my research too. For others, structured hybrid is the way to intentionally coordinate moments for meaningful in-person interactions. That's what some of us predicted, who were involved in strategizing this in the early days of the pandemic. 3. Newer flexible working companies will have figured out the workflows required to operate in a distributed environment. Add the impact of AI and the benefit on diverse talent pools - these companies will be used to embracing pace of change while enabling broader good. Once these companies grow, it will be difficult for old school thinkers to play catch up. This is what some of us predicted and great to see it come through.
