I remember being extremely nervous and unsure of how to handle being asked to be a Fire Dept. Lieutenant many years ago. I mean, being in charge of a crew was a heavy responsibility! One of my mentors told me - "Gregg, you know what you're doing on a scene, being promoted just means you assess the situation and think of the same things based upon what command needs to be accomplished and you simply delegate it to others and guide them." I've used that same mentality throughout life as well as the quick life vs death decision-making philosophy and skills learned to process through Denial, Deliberation, and come to a Decisive moment. Sometimes the decisions didn't quite work out, but we never hurt anyone or worse and always got the job done. In a life and death situation, ANY decision is better than none. Emergency Service jobs were never meant to be "decision by committee". Delays cause more harm or damage. The very skills we're all taught require quick courses of action, the ability to adapt and overcome, and in the heat of the moment, giving direct commands (NOT asking). Don't be the indecisive squirrel in the roadway. It never ends well.

At Flagger Force, we understand the importance of staying safe in a work zone. That's why our teams meet with the crew members and the clients during the pre-job brief and have a Jobsite Safety Discussion (JSD), where they can discuss potential risks related to the work the client is performing. Check out Flagger Force's blog about the importance of a JSD: https://bit.ly/4atp0aD #SafetyDriven

When does your crew call the DPA/CSO? Regularly carrying out audits and inspections on board the ship, have seen lot of SMS of various shipping companies focusing on procedures to Call the Master, Chief officer or Chief engineer, but not even a single which has a clear procedure to empower the crew to call the DPA /CSO. Companies do have whistle blowing policy in place but not clear instructions to crew as what should be reported and why? So just thought of reaching out to all my friends, colleague, mentors who are either DPA/CSO, Auditors/Inspectors or sailing masters and crew to list down when should the crew call the DPA. To start with I personally have few things in mind basis the audits/inspections that have been carried out in last 9 years. 1. If master is not carrying out boat and fire drills as required by SOLAS. (Have interviewed crew to find out that boat and fire drill was never carried out in full tenure of a particular Master of 4/6 months, but on records all was done regularly) 2. If security drills are not being carried out as required. 3. If alcohol policy is being breached on board. (Master himself enjoying the luxury of being the master, many a times) 4. MARPOL violations (everyone is aware of reporting this, as a huge bounty is received from US) 5. Planned maintenance is not being carried out but only recorded on paper. (Imagine a scenario where heated cargo is to be carried and steam coils are not tested prior loading and on using steam the coils are found to be leaking- effects can be solidification of cargo, loss of hire, bad reputation of managers, loss of business) 6............ Lets do little brain storming to build a better work culture and safe environment on board our ships. Please put your suggestions in the comments... regards Saurabh PS: To get engaged in better topics that will ensure safety of life, environment, property and cargo.
