While return to work remains sluggish in the Bay Area, cities must move quickly to adaptively reuse obsolete buildings and public spaces to create a spark in downtowns. I think we can all agree that SF and Oakland feel a bit lifeless on a typical weekday compared to pre-covid times. What do the storefronts featured in today's New York Times article have in common (other than being empty)? The answer is that they all feel like the unwanted stepchildren of the buildings looming above and around them. Urban designer Jan Gehl once stated that the ground floor is where the building meets the city - but in the photographed examples, it feels more like a sucker punch than a warm handshake. The reason? There seems to be an irresistible urge to give office and residential buildings the gravitas of a civic building, with the architectural expression crashing into the ground.
