Me Thinks You Are Lying... WE all get these And WE all know they're fake, misleading, attack vectors, etc. BUT How many of your team know they're lying? How many folks inside the company understand the deception? What about your family? Parents, grandparents know it's fake? Kids? Anyone taken time to educate them? How many of you have walked by someone on the street? Wondering if they're clicking the wrong things? Wondering if they've sent their credentials elsewhere? Who's network they're on? Remember it's NOT about us, it's NOT us talking in an echo chamber. WE need to get out, talk with everyone else about this. Here's my challenge for all of you. Take this image Build others Take the deck (I'll even build one and post it here if it helps) Go to an old people's home Go to the local LE, Firefighter, EMT location Go to your place of worship/Mesjed/hall, etc. Get out to the community center Apartment complex? Community area, HOA meeting etc. AND talk with others Our job is to protect ALL those around us. A Couch Potato: That (in the image) is my right leg, the bruise goes from the hip to the knee, and from the man vegetables to the inner, hairier area of the gluteus maximus... Apparently Saturdays unexpected dismount onto tarmac resulted in not only a crooked nose, chin, a few holes in the hand, knee, and bum, but also a rather spectacular bruise to end all bruises. I'm somewhat fascinated by it. I've fed it Arnica, heated it, cooled it, lathered it in teabags, Aloe, and a steady diet of extra strength Advil, but it still looks like a cross between Jaundice, Rabies, and an overly itched form of leprosy :) I have been told I need to walk or become a couch potato I can't do either If I walk my brain continues to spin, so no peace If I become a couch potato I'll go stir crazy So, I'm going to sneak out and go play on the bike, I'm going to try and avoid tarmac, single tracks, tortoises, suicidal squirrels, rocks, mud, and tree branches. At this point I think I need a velodrome... Or a safer hobby, possibly axe juggling... You know you're working from home when... It gets to 4pm and you go "hmmmm, did I brush my teeth this morning?" and you realize after the dogs run off that you haven't It's mid-afternoon and you're still sitting in your underwear at the desk, although you DID put a corporate t-shirt on for the conference call earlier. The teacup, breakfast plate, and dinner bowl (from last week) have made friends on the end of the desk and are about to form a union. When you go to the cupboard and all the snacks have mysteriously gone, and for the life of you, you can't work out why. Your alarm goes off at 0745, and you still make an 0800 meeting Your indoor putting game is so far advanced you're doing trick shots off the lampshade and dog... You are on first name basis with not only the postman, but also the UPS/DHL, and Amazon delivery folks. You've run out of things to buy from Brookstone Your music collection is on constant loop, you can sing along to all the tunes, and somehow it always gets stuck on 1970's hits. The fridge is official classified as a Frenemy The cleaners come over weekly and spend most of their time in your office space...and the bathroom. You find yourself engaging in intellectually stimulating conversations with the toaster. Shaving? What's that... I am grateful for: Being able to see another sunset and having the presence of mind TO be able to reflect on what I'm grateful for... That moment you wake up on a weekend and realize that you don't have to get out of bed quite yet... The freedom to get out on the bike and explore my surroundings The ability to leave a tip at the coffee shop or restaurant, and not then worry if I have enough left over to fill the tank, or pay bills tomorrow. The time, and access to technology to be able to lie in bed at 4am, lights dimly on, music playing, heating or AC keeping the room at the ideal temperature and NOT have to worry about IF there will be electricity tomorrow. The touch of another, be it a rugrat using me as a climbing frame, the hug of a daughter, or simply the closeness of a person who's at peace at night while I lay awake on guard, decompressing and untangling the day's thoughts. Peace, and space. In the form of both the physical realm where things are where I left them, in the same order I left them, and haven't moved, been cleaned, tidied, or fiddled with. In the digital realm a similar mindset. Community, friends, family, and folks I have yet to meet, but with whom I talk on a regular basis in the digital realm. There's an amazing number of good people here and elsewhere in this world we occupy, hopefully one day I get to finally meet everyone I'm connected to :) The memories, all of them. Each is a lesson, some harder to reflect upon, some raising a smile, some a sad moment of loss, others a moment to hope for, but having access to those memories, and a place to store them means so much. It'll Be Safer They Said... Stay off the single track for a few weeks Don't go biking in the shrubbery they said Stay off the trails they advised Be a good biker, stick to tarmac Heck, even try gravel, but not the deep stuff Nurse the right shoulder back to health They said... Apparently even I can make tarmac look dangerous Especially after it's rained In the bends Where the mud collects Doing the same speed as if it were dry Colorado folks on mountain bikes, apparently are like Texans and Californian's IN Colorado during first snow... Neither of us slow down for bends, assuming our technology, gear, tyres, and stuff will work. And then each of us is somewhat surprised when we end up in the scenery looking bewildered, confused and wondering why we're picking things out of our skin. Roadrash on the bum, a wonderful bruise that's turning black, orange, yellow and blue on one's right buttock. Roadrash on the right arm, thanks tarmac Left hand feeling sorry for itself Left pinky finger skinned Chunk missing out of chin, thankfully beard hides all but the blood clots Skinned and broken nose, now currently double sized. Right shoulder recovery paused... Safer on the tarmac?!? I'm going back to the shrubs!! Nothing else is needed Nothing else to be taught No other life lessons required No management techniques to be sold No leadership retreats to go on Stop Breathe Think React If we could ALL take these four steps I have a feeling life, our interactions, quality, and friendships in both personal and work situations would be a lot smoother. The hard part is putting it into practice. Take a moment, and next time your colleague, friends, kids, the person in the car next to you, or in the queue in front of you is about to incur you wrath take a moment to stop yelling inside, take a breath or two, think about the consequences, their situation, the world in general, if it's REALLY worth it, etc... and then maybe adjust your reaction accordingly. A New Framework: One to bind them all One to measure all by One to aspire to AND One new one because heck, why not? HOWEVER Not a technical framework, not another measure that we will all have to spend hours working out the details, the minutia, the phrasing and/or interpretations. Not another framework because we don't like the others, or want OUR name in lights, or don't know the word "collaboration" No, this one's simple, AND it's food related, because, after all, we ALL eat. THIS is the Curry Viscosity Score System or CVSS score for short. Having, for the last few months, been ferrying food between several locations in my newfound mid-hillbilly-west town I have realized, and come to better appreciate food I've cooked that has a higher viscosity, especially when being transported around in a crock pot, wedged on the floor of the vehicle while being piloted at high speed around the countryside. AND given I enjoy cooking Eastern, Indian, and Far Eastern food I think we need to add into the description OF the aforementioned regional delicacies a CVSS to aid in the correct means, method, and type of transportation. For example: mulligatawny would have a CVSS of 10 (Better get a tight lid, and don't even TRY to test physics) A red lentil dahl would be closer to a CVSS of 7 (Climbs the sides of dishes IF you exceed 0.5g on the skidpan) Hummus, Muhammara, and Baba Ghanoush all at a CVSS of 5.5 (Safe to corner, but avoid the handbrake...) Musakhan, if transported correctly a solid CVSS of 4 (Although if it slips you're picking it off the windscreen...) Curries? Ranging from CVSS of 8-3 depending upon ingredients (Also, thicker sauce/more cauliflower and potato = higher score) Baklava is a solid 2, that stuff can glue itself TO the tin. (If you exceed 1g in the corner it'll be wedged in an air vent) Cheese Manakeesh? Safest of all, a nice low CVSS of 1 (If this Middle Eastern frisbee gets loose it'll end up in your lap) So, welcome to your new scoring framework, enjoy. ID10T For The Modern Times: I failed I was swayed by another... I had eyes for something else... I was distracted I have no excuse I failed I was MEANT to be sticking to gravel and tarmac for a few weeks after the last two crashes onto rocks, and into a tree. I was MEANT to give the right shoulder time to repair, to work again, and to allow my arm to raise above my head without hurting. I was MEANT to allow the healing process to complete so that Lana could use me as a climbing frame again. I failed Last night I was out on the trails, being good on gravel, and I had an impulse to take a sharp left, and go wander around some nice single track. I know the route, I knew the up's and down's, but apparently I forgot about one specific patch while descending which left me in a tangled heap, my left knee now containing rock, dirt, moss, and probably bugs, my legs scraped up, BUT more importantly my right shoulder at a point where I was gasping for a few moments as I tried to work out how to get up without the use of it. Limping back to the car, reflecting upon my ID10T moment I realized that the hybrid bike should have a setting for "don't let this idiot on the trails for x-time" setting. GPS tracked I should only be allowed on known gravel/tarmac, and the bike go into limp or "sod off" mode if I sniff another rocky or rooty outcrop. So, Dear Trek Bicycle and others, please fit a digital nanny to the bike's electronics, tie it to an app and GPS, and my watch/phone, and help me help myself. Oh, and dear Apple thanks for the "you've fallen, do you need us to call rescue" it IS nice to know that works well. Feel free to use the ID10T image too. To AI or not to AI.. That IS the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the sting and lies of outrageous vendors, Or to take arms against a sea of lie, and by opposing end them? The conversation of what IS artificial and/or augmented intelligence continues to hound many a conversation. From leaders asking how to use it, manage it, fence it, protect it (or against it) through to various folks in the trenches wondering what we're letting ourselves in for. TO that end, and to hopefully provide a glimmer of clarity to those of you reading, please see/find a short/initial list of questions to ask the vendors, marketing folks, sales teams, BDR's and whomever else comes running at you clutching the AI solution to end-all-wars. - Do we need A.I. to solve our problem? If so why? - Defined goal? - Business need/product enhancement/elevation? - Data, all the data all the time and it needs TLC? - Do we have sufficient quantity and quality of data to use AI? - If not, how do we get there? - Do you have domain expertise in our field? - What is your delivery model? - Who is training (or trained) the solution? - Do you have any human(s) in the loop? - Is the system interpretable and auditable? - Who is liable if your solution fails? - What language choices, AND why? - Just using someone's cloud AI, if so, who's AND why? - Where is our data stored? Do you share / own our training? - What protections are around MY data? - What happens if you lose it? - Why did you choose A.I. for this product? - Hopefully NOT just to attract the VC's - Can you explain how YOUR following works: - Machine learning - Deep learning - Supervised models - Unsupervised learning - Do you use rules and / or search based techniques? - If so, when, where, how and why? - What are the precision, recall and F1 scores for your product? - What qualifications does your technical team possess? - Are clients in production or POC with this solution? - If only the latter, why? - What ROI are clients seeing? - How do they / did you measure this? - How much training / time was required for that ROI?. - Prove it. Hope this helps folks. There's some great stuff out there, equally there's some stuff that's nothing more than a well marketed set of RegEx expressions with a sprinkling of fuzzy logic and buzzwords. KNOW which is which. Seeing Past Tomorrow: Most of us are happy TO make it to the end of the day. - No incident (that we know of?) - No alarms (that we have to solve immediately) - Everything working as designed (we hope) - Tickets mostly in order (ish) - Email tamed (at least until the morning) - admin/admin and (apparently 135*) banished Job done, time to get outa here. Some folks DO have time/energy to look past the end of the day Heck, some are able to see past tomorrow. Rare is the individual, or company that can see much past that Why? - Resources - Time - Money - Focus - Effort - Tired - Competing priorities ALL of the above and more? Which means all too often we're in react and defend mode, applying what patches, updates, and fixes where we can until someone, somewhere clicks on the "free pizza" or "your CEO needs gift cards" message. Rarely do we get to step back, pause, breathe, think, THEN act Rarely can we take a moment TO assess our surroundings accurately Rarer still is benchmarking our world to see IF it's doing what it SHOULD be Let alone producing the reports to hand to management to justify "us" Etc. Which why, yesterday, sitting in a building in downtown New York I got to hang out at the advisory meeting with Sivan Tehila Maura Clancy and the Onyxia Cyber folks, other advisors, geeks and CISO's to talk through how TO change this, how TO bring some relief to our constraints, how TO do more with less, AND how to see past tomorrow.
