Will Late-Night Delivery Pay Off for Walmart? Extending the potential to service “last-minute needs,” Walmart is now offering late-night Express Delivery until 10 p.m. for orders placed by 9:30 p.m. Previously, the retailer provided delivery until 8 p.m. Walmart’s late-night delivery doesn’t come cheap. For Express Deliveries (guaranteed between 30 minutes to 90 minutes), Walmart charges $10 plus standard delivery fees (ranging from $7.95 to $9.95.) I waive standard delivery fees for Walmart+ members. Here's what retailers think about the move... How Walmart Is Beating Everyone In Groceries Sky high grocery bills are inflicting pain at the supermarket checkout counter. Food-at-home prices in 2022 jumped 11.4% and are expected to increase 5% in 2023. By comparison prices rose just 0.7% in 2019. In an effort to stretch their grocery dollars further a growing number of Americans are turning to Walmart. The Arkansas-based retailer is America’s largest grocer more than twice the size of its next biggest competitor. Known for its low prices and massive footprint Walmart takes in more than one in four grocery dollars in the U.S., a one and a half percent increase from 2021. EXCLUSIVE by Jake Bleiberg: Walmart charged customers wrong prices at 1,600 stores for days in a March event that has never before been reported. Records show it was one of a series of tech failures that have plagued Walmart ops recently. Walmart acknowledged a breakdown resulted in overcharged customers. It declined to say how many were affected, how much was overcharged, or how long the problem persisted. The technical issue was resolved and more than 80% of overcharged customers were reimbursed, Walmart says. Walmart also recently suffered cash register and website outages and photo and vision prescription order disruptions. Records seen by Bloomberg give the fullest picture yet of glitches that have hit a company that prides itself in being a leader of retail technologies that put customers first. Walmart described these issues as “disparate events” and “anomalies.” It’s “impossible for any company to innovate and introduce new technologies into their system without assuming some level of risk of potential disruption," the company said. Walmart Wants To Start The Day Together. Deliveries in 30 Minutes, Now Starting at 6:00AM Rise and shine with Walmart. The retail giant announced new extended delivery times yesterday. The expansion now makes their on-demand rapid delivery available starting at 6AM. In the press release, Walmart mentioned a few ways to see how this new service supports their customers. • Baby Essentials - Know that you get what you need for your child to start the day • Work Wear - Have an accident before that meeting and need something new? • Kitchen Gear - Blender break down during meal prep and everyone uses it for breakfast? • Cottaging - Live bait will soon be something you don't have to grab the day before leaving Reading that you might think all of that is ridiculous - who actually needs things that badly that early. In most cases, they probably don't. But most people don't need ultrafast delivery anyways. What Walmart is doing here is brilliant. It's not about the actual volume of the 6AM on-demand customers. It's really about conditioning. It's about getting customers used to taking deliveries starting at 6AM (or earlier 🤔). By offering this service "at the customer's convenience", Walmart doesn't have to face consumers feeling like the service is intrusive - since they picked it. The goal, over time will be to start pushing more of the day before orders out at these early hours. Why? Because it will drop the amount of time lost due to congestion, it will drop the amount of deliveries impacted by porch piracy, and will increase consumer satisfaction as more deliveries are received by customers when they are home. The pressure that massive orgs like Walmart and Amazon are putting into the system is a strategic advantage. They know most carriers will not be able to (or possibly want) to follow their expanded delivery hours. Having the density in your target geographies is key.
