The 7 languages of empathy Author Gary Chapman has written a famous book "The Five Languages of Love" Almost everyone knows what their love language is Mine are quality time and acts of service (As pictured below when feeding a farm animal) My colleague Julie Pham, PhD Also covered the Five levels of respect in one of her podcast interviews So I thought lets devise my own version of the Seven languages of empathy 1. Words of affirmation Similar to love language, what you say and how you say it Can truly demonstrate or crumble the level of empathy a patient can feel from you 2. Acts of service Do you go above and beyond in your actions To show your level of care and compassion for your patients (within professional boundaries of course) and if so, how ? 3. Quality time How do you make the most of your time during your patient consultations ? Are you present, engaged, listening actively, asking relevant questions Or are focused more on note taking and admin tasks ? 4. Gifts Naturally physical gift exchange between patients and providers is tricky business However you can offer them the gift of courage, resilience, strength and nurturance 5. Emotional Empathy Guided by your intuition Where you can experience first hand what your patient goes through 6. Cognitive Empathy You're focused on getting to the root cause Diagnosing and committed to finding a solution 7. Care and Concern-based Empathy that oozes of compassion All of these forms of empathy are equally valid and positive Also its normal to have multiple empathy languages, and Switch them up according to our patients' needs and challenges Some may come naturally to you others may not A cognitive empath is no less empathetic Than an emotional counterpart even though it may be expressed in atypical ways What language of empathy do you most relate to and demonstrate ?
