Indeed Yes, if fewer control mechanisms had been put in place. 1) Crowd control: Although only 80K people were given authorization to congregate, over 2.5 million people did so. 2) Clear Escape Route: Due to extreme crowding and insufficient exits, there was a bottleneck that was made worse by careless two-wheeler parking. Rain and compounding power combined to convert the paddy field into sludge. 3) Recognizing the pattern: Every incident of this kind follows the same pattern. Few are listed below > Ninety-plus people died at Kerala's Sabarimala temple > 40+ people died in the Mumbai Pilkington Station tragedy. > Over 2000 people died in the Hajj stampede. > 40+ people died in the Amristsar stampede near the railway track. > stampede at Vaishno Devi temple where12 were killed There is a significant gap even in learning from past instances. 4) Complacency: To reduce the likelihood of a human crush, well-established safety precautions are advised for major events and gatherings. Unless these procedures are followed no point in devising one 5) Preventive measures: When granting approvals, administrative machinery must guarantee strict adherence to the venue layout, exit pathways, hassle-free entrance, availability of a war room to handle any eventualities, communication aid, live crowd movement surveillance, and density monitoring. Why aren't these details taken into account before approval is given? Every stampede with a large death toll has occurred during religious festivals. 🌧️ 26th July, 2005 – 18 years back same day... A Day Mumbai Will Never Forget! ☔️ What happened on that day, that when unnoticed❓ On this day, Mumbai witnessed an event that left an indelible mark in its history. The heavens opened up, showering the city with an unprecedented 944 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. The aftermath was nothing short of devastating, as the city's lifeline came to a halt, and chaos and despair ensued. Transportation came to a standstill, leaving countless Mumbaikars stranded. Many had to brave the floods and walk for unimaginable distances of 20, 30, or even 40 kilometers to reach their homes. Lives were lost, and the destruction was massive. This day will forever stir strong emotions in my heart whenever I think about it. So what positive happened on that day? But amidst the darkness, glimmers of hope emerged, showcasing the true spirit of humanity. We witnessed the remarkable power of unity and compassion that day: 1. United in Adversity: People came together, strangers supporting strangers, helping each other navigate through the turmoil. 2. Sharing and Caring: In the face of scarcity, a heartening sight was seeing individuals share whatever resources they had. Food was distributed on the roads to those in dire need. 3. Acts of Kindness: Shelters were offered to unknown individuals who had nowhere to go, demonstrating the generosity of the human spirit. 4. A World Without Strangers: On that fateful day, everyone became family, transcending differences and affiliations, and stood strong together. It is a testament to the power of humanity and resilience of Mumbaikars. 🤝 As we reflect on this unforgettable event, let us not forget the invaluable life lessons it has taught us.
