Over the last few weeks I’ve been listening to André 3000’s ‘New Blue Sun’ and his interviews talking about this new direction he says he’s been given. In an interview with GQ he talks about ‘feeling’ being his “barometer” for gauging how and what he does throughout his career in his art and in his work. Listening to him speak about feeling struck a chord and brought up this question on why we underestimate feeling and the importance of it. I think feeling in the context of strategy, or as a barometer for decision-making, is seen as the antithesis of data, science or research. It’s associated with something ‘soft’ rather than tested, tried and true. But I think we discount what feeling is actually made of. Feeling speaks to a kind of knowledge that can only be built from experience. It speaks to a reaction or judgment based on what could be seen as instinct. We know that how people feel impacts their decisions. In a business context, how people, particularly younger people, feel about a brand impacts their consumption. Research is always a fundamental part of strategy-building for us at FourTwo Creative especially when it comes to understanding audiences. Still, so much of the most successful creative that we build on top of strategy leans into intuition, feeling and knowledge based on lived experience and our understanding of the people we do our work for. It’s made me think about what we might achieve if we honored ‘feeling’ more when it comes to work—even outside of creating art. As we wrap up this year and look forward to the next, I’m excited to focus more on what work feels good in 2024.

"How is it that people fall into the trap of, are you on this side or are you on that side? How is it that it is so easy to obscure or remove the possibility of a third position?" Carolyn Birdsall and I had the pleasure to talk to the inspiring Mila Turajlic about her ongoing project on the cinematic history of Non-Alignment, archival research, the relationship between cinema and politics, and the continuing importance of finding a "third way". I was just reading the newsletter from James Clear, author of Atomic Habits and I really liked the following quote: 👇 The television series Mozart in the Jungle reminds us of the beauty of being an amateur: "You say 'amateur' as if it was a dirty word. 'Amateur' comes from the Latin word 'amare', which means to love. To do things for the love of it." Content and Confidence Coach ✭ Business Storyteller ✭ Empowering coaches to attract their ideal audience with the right messaging and social media strategy
Could your #business be a little more Moulin Rouge? Get your head out the gutters you lot! I have a valid point to make... You see, I was unsure what to expert from the stage version of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 classic because after rewatching the film with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor just last year, I really didn't like it anymore. In fact, I changed the channel. And this is strange because I LOVED the film in my teens. But it just goes to show how our tastes evolve and how what audiences want can change too. Jump back to Saturday when I went to watch the musical version in the West End and WOW 🤩 It was far superior to film! We had: 💋 Updated songs 💋 Modern references 💋 New routines 💋 Diverse characters I absolutely loved it and would go and see it again in a heartbeat (hint hint husband for Christmas)! But it also goes to show that to find your audience in 2023, you can't stick with the same messaging you had in 2001. A direct film to stage adaptation would have fallen severely flat! ❤️ You have to evolve ❤️ You have to adapt ❤️ You have to meet your audience where they are today It's not about selling your audience what you know they need, it's about finding out what they want and deciding then (and only then) how you should talk to them. Be more Moulin Rouge. Don't be afraid to refresh your branding and messaging. After all, those business that evolve, are more likely to survive. #Content #Messaging #PersonalBranding #Change
