This month, BlueLena is celebrating a milestone: four years since the company was founded, coinciding with the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. Leading up to our launch, we identified a need to help publishers diversify their revenues, particularly focusing on reader revenue models and the potential for direct support for local journalism. However, the pandemic quickly changed the landscape, causing traditional revenue streams to dry up and making direct reader support essential for survival. The events of 2020, including the tragic murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Jacob Blake, and Ahmaud Arbery among others, underscored the importance of local journalism in holding those in power accountable and addressing systemic racism, funding inequities, lack of access to credible reporting and myriad failing business practices. In response, BlueLena worked tirelessly to support publishers during this challenging time. Those early months of BlueLena called for action, round-the-clock work and being there for publishers in a time of great need, and that's what we did. As BlueLena marks four years in business, we reflect on our humble beginnings and look forward to the future with optimism and determination. Despite launching during a global pandemic in support of an industry and society facing unprecedented challenges, we have remained steadfast in our mission to empower independent publishers and support vital local journalism. We have adapted and evolved, providing essential tools, training, and programming like BlueLena Academy to help publishers navigate the rapidly changing media landscape. Our focus is and will continue to be on providing access to solutions and services affordably and at scale for publishers of all sizes. As we continue on our journey, we remain committed to building a better future for the industry and the communities it serves. While the road ahead may be fraught with challenges, we remain dedicated to driving positive change and focused on making a lasting impact.
