Sedona Conference Deputy Executive Director Kenneth Withers teamed up with retired federal judges Judge Bernice Donald (Ret.), James Francis, and Ron Hedges to author "Generative AI and Courts: How Are They Getting Along?," published in this month's edition of the Practising Law Institute (PLI) Chronicle. Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) presents exciting opportunities for the advancement of the legal profession, but nobody quite yet knows its boundaries, and courts are now only scratching the surface as to the limitations on which attorneys can use GAI. The article examines the nature of generative artificial intelligence and what it can offer attorneys, the concept of "hallucinations" and what those have led courts to do, and likely causes of action arising out of generative artificial intelligence use or misuse.
