Our Group turns 55 today - ABC Consultants, India's first recruitment company was founded by Bish BP Agrawal in 1969. While Shiv Agrawal now runs ABC and I now chair AltoPartners Executive Search and run Accord India with Toral Patel, he is still at office (now with the group executive search firm Accord India), serving clients and arguing about billing targets, well into his eighties. He was also the first Asian to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association of Executive Search and Leadership Consultants (AESC) a few years ago. Recruitment is in our DNA, we spoke of little else at home, at restaurants, at the club - everyone had been a client or a candidate, with fascinating stories to boot. ABC was really my "first sibling" (yes, I'm carbon-dating myself here), an integral part of my consciousness ever since I was a child, helping Doc "screen" the stacks of CVs he bought home, by drawing eyepatches and mustaches on the photographs on the F4s for the MPI (old timers will know what that is!). While we are certainly not the only game in town, I daresay we still have some nuisance value, and continue to have a very unique and special culture. We - he - certainly had impact, well beyond the clients we served, he practically built the professional recruitment in the country. I was one of the many thousands of recruiters in India who were trained by Doc and others at ABC over five decades. "Anyone who does this successfully for 3 months will never leave this profession, this nasha" - true that.
