I had a question last week at the Elevating Finance evening regarding a dormant partner ecosystem and the best approach to take in such circumstances. The business in question had 41 partners, but only a handful that actively referred business into the partner platform. Here’s my thoughts 👇 _____________________ 🔸41 is a large number of partners, how many partner managers are looking after that ecosystem? One of the common attributable metrics in failing partnerships is a partner that is being underserviced. A partner manager can only look after so many partners at an optimum level. 🔸What are the challenges in their own market that the partner is currently facing and does the platform partner in question actually help to resolve any of them for the partner? 🔸Consider partner tiering if it isn’t already in place. Understanding the value a partner can bring (on both sides) is very important, as is revenue ultimately. Making sure your team is assigning the relevant support and access to wider business functions for the level of partner they are dealing with can drive cadences that lead to better results from partners. 🔸Many start-ups and scale-ups with immature partnerships ecosystems may well have had a bit of a ‘hit and hope’ approach to partnerships in the early stages of their growth. This can lead to a situation such as the above, where technically a business has a lot of contracted partners, but the reality is that the lions share of them are doing next to nothing. Re-visit these partnerships with your new strategy and determine which partners are worth putting more time into and which ones are best walking away from. 🔸Understanding how your competitors are incentivising their partners is also very important. It may be that some of the dormant partners were offered better terms, support or incentive schemes from a competitor, which is why the partnership never took off. It is paramount that you are aware of what the competition is offering to your partners. _____________________ There is a much wider strategy that overlays all of this of course, but this is my quickfire response!
