This is a boss move by NITDA Nigeria. In the last 15 years, only 3% of CEA research has come from Africa. As part of my presentation at the AFHVS conference, I asked: Is Africa missing out on the CEA revolution? We are undoubtedly late to CEA, but didn't they say better late than never? I'm excited by this partnership and stoked to see how Nigeria will integrate CEA into its agricultural sector and use it to serve the people and the planet. https://lnkd.in/epMgee58

I had a great time presenting my work on the State of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Research at the 2024 AFHVS-ASFS Conference, 'Right to Food - Food as Commons,' in Syracuse. The discussions were incredibly rich, nuanced, and thought-provoking. I made valuable new connections and reconnected with old friends, particularly Alexandra Neill whom I last saw during my MSc program at Newcastle University. Alex expertly juggled between two rooms just to attend my presentation - that's how stars do! I'm super grateful to the Baur Lab Family who showed up to cheer me on. On to the next one!

As we celebrate World Environment Day, it’s certainly useful to remind ourselves that while sustainability discourses have been dominated by climate change, there are other planetary boundaries that are crucial to maintaining an earth-system environment in which humanity can exist safely. These include ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone depletion, the nitrogen and the phosphorus cycles, global fresh- water use, change in land use, biodiversity loss, atmospheric aerosol loading, and chemical pollution. Planetary data suggests that three boundaries - climate change, nitrogen overload, and biodiversity decline - have already been breached. Beyond rhetorics, posturing and political correctness, our individual and collective mitigation efforts must reflect these realities. We must also continue to ask genuine questions, even if tough. As an entrepreneur and researcher, I have, since reading “The Ecological Rift: Capitalism’s War on the Earth” been troubled by these questions: 1. Can industrial capitalism ever be sustainable? Or, are we misguided to think that the very system driving our planet's destruction can, with coordinated changes, rescue it? 2. What’s the most practical role for capitalism in a sustainable future? What are your thoughts? Happy World Environment day.

In bringing my two-part series on regenerative agriculture to a close, I provided actionable recommendations to fast track the adoption and scaling of RA in Nigeria. Regenerative agriculture remains one of the most polarizing subjects in global agriculture, generating optimism and pessimism in equal measure. Going forward, this division should be interpreted as a clarion call for increased research particularly in grey areas - such as standardising the efficacy of a range of regenerative agriculture techniques in an integrated manner over large areas - knowing fully well that it is science and not our emotions that will lead us to our desired farming future. https://lnkd.in/d3WuEUA
