🌟 Celebrating Real-Life Superheroes this Mother's Day 🌟 This upcoming Mother's Day, we're proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible work of our McGowan Fellows, who are not just leaders but real-life superheroes creating positive change. Meet Sahar Jamal, a McGowan Alumna whose journey embodies the spirit of ethical leadership. As an advocate for working mothers, Sahar understood the challenges many face upon returning to work after childbirth. She recognized the need for solutions that support mothers in balancing their professional and personal lives effectively. In response, she spearheaded the development of a small, discreet, battery-operated breast pump that refrigerates milk, addressing critical challenges faced by mothers in Kenya and beyond. Sahar's story is a testament to the impact of ethical leadership nurtured through our Fellowship Program. At the heart of this program are six guiding principles: Accountability, Character & Integrity, Courage, Empathy, Resilience, and Self-Awareness. These principles empower our Fellows to make integrity-based business decisions that create meaningful social impact. Through our program, Sahar discovered a community of like-minded leaders. Together, they are shaping a future where leadership is defined by principles and actions that benefit society at large. I am grateful to be part of the Polaris Young Adult Leadership Network as a faculty member and researcher through Pivot NW Research. Shari Oosting offers some wonderful words of wisdom in her latest blog post regarding discernment and making those big “What’s Next?” decisions. Here are some of Shari’s suggested questions to ask yourself in times of transition: Part of aligning with God’s call is better understanding yourself. This is not an invitation to be vain or narcissistic. This is about slowing down enough to explore what God has in store for you next and to delight in the wisdom of your gifts, your body, your experience, and your stories. Slow down. Cancel the plans that you can. Reflect. Ask deep questions. Journal or talk through them with a trusted friend. Here are a few places to start: What has always been true about who you are? How have you changed in the past five years, and what do those changes mean for you? How do you most want to grow or change in the next three years? What do you feel, need, and value? What do you aspire to personally, professionally, relationally, and spiritually? What does your family (chosen or given) need the most? What about your neighborhood, community, or country? Dr Donna Stemmer the Founder of WorkRight 2023 has ground breaking insight and actions around the identification of bullying behaviours in organisational structures. Her programmes have uncovered systemic and devastating behaviours that have both massive mental health and productivity/revenue impact on the New Zealand workforce. Her story and research is both inspirational and tragic. The numbers she has uncovered are a blight on the workplace landscape and a direct inditement on leadership competency and capacity. NZ continues to be highly under invested in leadership development and we are seeing the results of that shortfall and short sightedness. Leadership directly impacts, productivity, engagement, retention, revenue, innovation and culture. Why wouldn't we invest??? There is no sugar coating this.
