If you want to increase your chances of success, you must increase your failure rate! Its something what I had to learn when I started building theMiracle. Coming from a corporate background where failure was mostly seen as a costly consequence or delay, I had to shift my mindset. I had to start thinking differently. Today I strongly believe that if you are not failing fast and failing constantly, as a startup and business you are hardly going to innovate. And "failing fast" comes with testing, experimenting, talking to your customers and community (constantly). Understanding the importance of failure is crucial. Why? It is what you have learned from failure and how you apply what you have learned. That makes all the difference. In the process of failure, and learning from failure, is when the most profound learning takes place. Failure = Feedback Feedback = Knowledge Knowledge = Power Jeff Bezos once said: “one of my job is to encourage people to be bold. Its incredible hard. Experiments are by their nature prone to failure. A few big successes compensate for dozens and dozens of things that didn’t work”. Amazons most prominent and important failures: - Amazon Auctions: Failed against eBay, but taught the importance of understanding customer preferences for fixed pricing. - zShops: Didn't work, yet paved the way for the hugely successful Amazon Marketplace. - Fire Phone: A costly failure (178M) that contributed vital lessons to the development of Alexa. Our approach at theMiracle: - “Fail faster” as a core value that encourages risk-taking and rapid learning. - Every team member can bring in ideas and test them. We empower everyone at the team to do so! Every Wednesday afternoon we create an environment for "ideas" and define the next steps, timelines. Jeff Bezos often tells the story of Amazon's early inefficient days. “We were packing on our hands and knees on the concrete floor, and I said to the software engineer packing with me, ‘We need knee pads.’ He looked at me like I was the dumbest guy he’d ever seen in his life, and he said 'Jeff, we need packing tables.'”   Every business goes through a “knee pad” versus “packing tables” moment when there is an explosion of orders. It takes new ideas, tools, or new processes to overcome this. Some people call this innovation, and it can be as simple as a packing table; it is an improvement.   I love Jeff Bezos’ story because it is so relatable. I also appreciate the start-up journey he shares, running back and forth to the post office and packing things on the floor himself. It gives those of us grafting on our hands and knees a lot of hope that we too could have a big break in business growth. Some prefer to buy into a business, and that is fine. Others like to build businesses from the ground up.   There was a time I was baking bread… lots of it. It was my bakery's first year, and I decided it would be a great idea to make hot cross buns for Easter… by hand. Let’s just say that I did not bake another bun until I invested in a mixing machine, which I did the following year.   Easter came around again, and I was ready for it, or so I thought. I had so many hot cross buns orders via WhatsApp, and I worked 36 hours straight to fulfill those orders. At least 14 of those hours were spent analyzing orders to ensure they were correct, and on invoicing so we could get our money in. It was another year of unnecessary suffering, so I searched for a solution to eliminate this pain.   The solution came as a simple third-party App called ShopKite Merchant. Using this App eliminated that administrative bottleneck. Rather than spending hours collating customer data, I created a ShopKite Nigeria storefront where the customer could fill in that information and create an order. All that was left for me was to fulfill and print their invoice.   So whether there were tens or hundreds of orders, ordering was seamless. A few days back, I noticed an interesting line by the Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, which pulled back my scroll. It’s a mindset that keeps you learning every single time. It’s something that keeps leveling up your mind. It's an idea most people you know don't have. Because of its power, it unlocks tons of opportunities… flooding into your doorways and making you not want to return to the old state of mind. Here’s what he said… “If you want to become highly successful, stop being a know-it-all”  In other words, be curious. But when you think about… How many around us nerd out on a topic they’ve never heard before? How many actually keep an open and curious mind? How many ask when they have questions? Not many. And usually, parents and teachers shut them down when they ask too much. As a result? Our minds are fixated… “Oh, the world is what it is, I just have to follow.” “My parents know-it-all. I shall follow their paths.” “There’s a new thing? Not interested.” It’s dangerous. Because when you think you know-it-all and stop being curious about the things around you, you stop learning. And start decaying. Just like the saying goes…  “When you stop growing, you start dying.” That’s why business owners need to stay curious, keep asking questions, and never stop learning.
