Excited to share a link to my article published in Neonatal Network - hot off the press! https://lnkd.in/evp_De9b Title: Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative: Past, Present, and Future | Springer Publishing Abstract: #qualityimprovement is paramount in the #nursing profession today, and there is increased awareness and focus on implementing evidence-based practices into nursing care. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is an #evidencebased program that promotes and protects exclusive #breastfeeding by encouraging breast milk feeds to infants from the time of birth. This article will discuss the history and current state of breastfeeding in the United States as well as an evidence-based change model that can be used to implement the BFHI to change the status quo and future of breastfeeding in the United States. Physical benefits to the infant and mother as well as financial benefits to the mother, hospital, and global economy will also be addressed.

CPR is a life saving skill everyone should know how to perform.
Meet Jennifer Hayes, a dedicated pediatric nurse whose life took an unexpected turn during what appeared to be a perfect pregnancy at 30 weeks. In a heartbeat, she found herself in the grips of sudden cardiac arrest. Her hero husband, Kyle, and their neighbor, Russ, became her lifeline. Together, they dialed 911, performed CPR, and fought to keep Jennifer alive until paramedics arrived. Jennifer's heart rhythm stabilized after an intense 15 minutes of CPR and two shocks. But the journey had just begun. Four days after her cardiac arrest, Jennifer was finally reunited with her son, Micah, and just eight days later, she was discharged with a wearable defibrillator and blessed with no lasting neurological impairments. Micah, a true warrior, spent 71 days in the NICU, defying the odds and conquering every milestone. On January 21, 2018, the long-awaited day arrived when he could finally go home. Today, Jennifer and Micah are living proof that CPR and AEDs save lives, thriving in a life filled with love, resilience, and unwavering strength. #SurvivorStory #SCAFoundation #MiracleBaby #StrengthInFamily

There, we said it. As IBCLCs and supporters of thriving families, we support your goals as a family and what works best for you. There is a misconception that lactation consultants only push for breastfeeding and breastmilk. Some mothers may not be able to breastfeed or pump due to medical reasons. There are ways to breastfeed with a supplemental nursing system (SNS) and we can certainly help with that, but the important take-away from all of this is, you are enough. The feeding process is a small part compared to the bonding process. You can nurture your child whether or not you choose to breastfeed or pump. #lactationsupport #patientadvocacy #womenshealth #infantnutrition

Nothing prepared me for being a breastfeeding mother in the NICU. I had breastfed 3 kids for 18 months or more with no problems, but when #4 was born, he was not able to breastfeed for weeks. I was pump dependent and that was incredibly challenging. Fortunately, we were able to successfully breastfeed for 2.5 years with no supplementation, but that is rarely the case for the NICU families I care for. What is your experience working with NICU families? Read this amazing book for applying best practices around human milk in the NICU: https://amzn.to/3KEGvde

👶 Understanding Neonatal Care 👶 The term "neonatal" refers to newborns, particularly those requiring medical attention - caring for babies who arrive early, have low birth weight, or need specialised treatment due to various medical conditions. Keeping baby close and keeping baby warm is at the core of what the mOm is all about. There are usually four distinct levels of care, tailored to the specific needs of each baby: 🔹 Intensive Care: For the most vulnerable babies, born very premature or with extremely low birth weight. 🔹 High Dependency Care: For babies needing substantial observation and support, including those recovering from serious illness. 🔹 Low Dependency Care: For stable, growing babies who don’t require constant observation. 🔹 Transitional Care: For babies who need some medical treatment but can stay with their mothers. Often located within the maternity area of the hospital but should be seen as a level of care and not a location. Our device ensures that every baby gets the care they need to thrive. Portable, easy to use with intelligent power and no servicing requirements, it can be used across the care pathway from the birthing room to postnatal and neonatal care no matter where the clinical setting is located. Patient empowerment in healthcare can be promoted through variety of nursing interventions, including helping patients build self awareness, assessing the level of knowledge and delivering the right education and coaching on the topic. The aim of patient education is to empower them to be able to take responsibility for their own health. As we celebrate #worldbreastfeedingweek at #hadiclinickw let us celebrate our staff, who are also working mothers and reflect how organisations can support and encourage breastfeeding for them. The benefits are long term, not only for the breastfeeding staff, their children and families, but also for the company itself, society and environment. 💜 World Prematurity Day 💜 One in 10 children is born prematurely and today we raise awareness of the challenges for women and babies associated with preterm birth. Unlike full-term babies, premature babies develop and mature during their stay in the hospital. Therefore, creating an ideal nursing environment is vital to providing a healthy setting to support their well-being and development. At Chromaviso, we take pride in making a positive impact in Neonatal Units with our evidence-based circadian lighting. In short, the lighting is designed to protect the premature babies' underdeveloped eyes and brains from direct light exposure while creating a calm and nurturing atmosphere for the staff and parents. Read more about how our lighting is used in neonatal care here: 🔗https://lnkd.in/eNMkepFV #WorldPrematurityDay2023 #WPD2023 #worldprematurityday #circadianlighting

They are so important. But, there is so much being required of new parents and their families in the first few months. It’s a whirlwind of lots to do. “Overwhelming” is not enough to describe the experience. To ensure Well-baby appts are more obtainable, we should align schedules. Evening and weekend hours should be offered. If we really think about it, we are asking parents to come in for services between the traditional hours of 9a-12p and 2p-5p, at which point becomes an experiment to test how many babies can be seen in 6 short hours Mon -Fri. Furthermore, we are always assuming working parents have accommodating employers. Let’s do better.
Pediatrician Joy Elion, MD, describes what happens at each of a newborn's first three pediatrician visits and explains why they're important for both the babies and their families. https://lnkd.in/gR5CcETa
