Professor, Practitioner & Possibilitizer | Award Winning Author & Teacher | Igniter of better tomorrows
▶ Every epic tale has an origin story, and as Molly McGuigan shares in her post below, the #DitchtheDitty journey began with a wake-up call when someone literally handed her a ditty bag to hold during an event. 💊 🔎 Much like Neo taking the red pill in The Matrix, we had a moment of clarity where we saw things in a new way: we realized that we--especially as women--- often accept tasks and responsibilities we don't want or need. We hold onto them out of politeness, niceness, fear of not being liked, or simply not knowing how to say "no." 👝 The idea of a "ditty bag" became a powerful metaphor for us. Once we recognized these metaphorical ditty bags we’ve been picking up all our lives, we couldn't unsee them. We started reflecting on why we accept these "Ditties" and, more importantly, how we can start ditching them and stop picking up new ones so that we have more time and energy for DELIGHTS instead of DITTIES. We want to hear your #DitchingTales... ➡ How have you ditched Ditties you no longer want to carry? ➡ When have you NOT accepted a Ditty and what was the impact? ➡ What are the different ways Ditties are delivered to us? ➡ How do you determine what is and is not a Ditty in your life? Share below and join us on Thursday June 13th for a FREE 45 minute "Lunch, Learn & Laugh" Session where we will dig into ditching Ditties together! 🆓 Grab your spot at: https://lnkd.in/e5mFNryK @ Follow us and join the #DitchTheDitty conversation at: Website: https://lnkd.in/eR2dVtnY Linked-In: https://lnkd.in/ezqUy4dn Facebook: https://lnkd.in/ehYYUa5v #DitchTheDitty #DtD #ShedTheShoulds #DoWhatMatters
I had an experience 6 years ago that changed everything. It came about as one of those moments when you see something with fresh eyes, and you can't go back to seeing it the old way. In this particular moment, I was leading a huge 800-person conference which I had worked on for 2 years. I was racing around doing 100 different things and out of nowhere I was handed a bag of someone's "stuff" to hold. And you know what I did? I held it, not because I wanted to or because I had to, but because I felt I "should". Really?? That is the moment when Ditch the Ditty was born! A "Ditty" represents all of those things we as women say “yes” to even though we don’t want or have to. We accept Ditties to be polite, please others, or because we feel we should. My amazing partners, Dr. Lindsey Godwin and Miriam Novotny, MSPOD, and I have spent the past 6 years interviewing women around the world, conducting workshops and doing research. We currently are in the process of publishing our first book! Why is this work important us (and to women around the world)? Because life’s too short for endless “yeses.” Time doesn’t stretch to fit them all, and as the Ditties pile up, so does our exhaustion. Ditching the unnecessary lets us reclaim our time for what truly matters. We are very excited to share this work with the world and I hope you will come along on this journey with us! So much wisdom, vulnerability, sharing and sisterly support at the Portfolio Collective fireside chat today in celebration of #internationalwomensday2024 Thank you to host Nicola Twiston Davies ACC and panel members Fiona Chorlton-Voong, Maria Evans, confidence coach, Jade Buffong-Phillips and Vanesa Pazos. So many gems that it's impossible to cover them all, but here are a few snippets (NB I'm paraphrasing, not quoting!) Maria reminded us that women should not beat themselves up if they lack some confidence, but keep working on it, because it impacts our life choices, ability to negotiate and therefore outcomes. Just 50 years ago we could not even apply for a credit card without a man's sign-off. It takes time to move away from this ingrained patriarchal culture, but we will accelerate together. We also need to constantly remind organisations that diversity of opinion in leadership teams makes good economic sense and stronger orgs - it's not just a nice to have. Vanesa encouraged us all to show up as our authentic selves, and build a tribe around us to support and encourage each other, like a virtual advisory board. We are stronger together. We need to change how society reacts when girls and women assert their opinions, too often we are told to simmer down instead of being actively listened to and our opinions valued. The flexibility we seek in the workplace is not just good for women, it's good for everyone. Jade shared her experiences of working part-time and still smashing targets as Head of Marketing. She caused us all to challenge the preconceptions that you have to work endlessly to achieve great things. Whether working for an organisation or for yourself, take a moment to think through what you want out of life. Figure out what part of it you want to be taken up by your work, and make space for other things that are important to you, be that family, friends, causes or hobbies. It's almost always worth asking your employer for the flexibility to accommodate your wishes. If they say no, reframe this, and either acknowledge that they are not the right organisation for you, or perhaps decide that you are willing to compromise. But if you don't ask, you'll never know. Fiona went further to say it can always be the start of a dialogue, a bit like objection handling in sales - see if you can turn it into a yes. Don't take it personally - be objective and negotiate. As she recently became a mother (congrats again Fiona!) this has given her a new perspective on the space that work takes up, and she encourages us all to know our worth, and be confident of our value when pitching our services. We are giving up our valuable time that could be spent with our loved ones, so we owe it to them and ourselves to put a fair price on it! I absolutely loved this fireside chat and came away buzzing. Thanks to the Portfolio Collective and panel for the inspiration, and some great new connections! Happy International Women's Day everyone. ❤️

Today, we recognise the resilience, strength, and brilliance of women in all walks of life – from business leaders breaking barriers to activists advocating for change, and from educators shaping minds to mothers raising families. With the theme of #InspireInclusion in mind, rather than looking back to who has inspired each of us in the past, or present, we’re looking ahead to how each of us individually can inspire inclusion in the future.
