A recent poll from the University of Chicago revealed something shocking… Americans are the unhappiest they have been in 50 years… Only 14% report being happy. Think about that—only 14%. We have to rethink our lives and careers. Money is not the goal; the goal is happiness. I firmly believe that individuals should pursue their dreams, even if doing so requires making sacrifices along the way. This chart shows the long-known ‘arc of happiness’ – where we start life almost blindly optimistic, encounter mid-life trials (sometimes accompanied by crises), then move towards the end of our lives in a more contented manner. It’s interesting how often this catches audiences out. Given the majority many of us present to are 35-55 (i.e., nearing or in the doom zone!) it makes me think too many of us still experience difficulties without realising it’s as much about our life-stage as it is about us finding life uniquely tough. Reflection and reaction; 2 strategies for human growth. The year is coming to an end and I can say that a lot has unfolded. I have failed, won, lost, and gained. But one thing I discovered this year is that humans do not grow unless they reflect on their actions and react based on their findings. Here are 2 ways you can reflect on your actions this 2023. ✅ Seek feedback from friends and families: many times we do not know ourselves better than those who receive our actions. As the year is coming to an end, this is the best time to inquire from friends, colleagues, or even families how you have affected them this year. Seek their suggestions, their criticisms and take all with an open mind. ✅ Check your New Year resolution for 2023: It is not a strange practice that people often draft out a New Year resolution on the first day of the year. This consists of what they set to achieve for the year. You can reflect on yourself by going back to the goals you set to achieve this year. Check how many you were able to achieve, and the challenges that hindered you in achieving others. These findings will guide you better in the coming year. Doing these 2 things now will not only give you a glimpse of how your year has been but also how to achieve more in the coming year. I watched an eye-opening documentary on Netflix - "LIVE TO 100: Secrets of Blue Zones." It delves into the lives of those residing in Blue Zones, places where living past 100 is not uncommon. The secrets to their longevity were said to be: • Balanced Diet • Regular Exercise • Pursuing a Purpose • Solid Social Connections It was enlightening to learn about the world's healthiest, longest-lived communities. But one takeaway struck a chord with me: The chase for meaningful work, even past the 'retirement age.' It made me think... Urban professionals today often face evolving or obsolete careers as they near retirement. Thus, the necessity to explore new paths or engage in volunteer work as an alternative (assuming you have the financial means to retire). I then thought about my career. Even as I get older, can I: • Continue to serve my clients? • Guide and mentor my associates? • Balance work with the ageing process? The answer is yes. Unlocking Wisdom: Reflections on Leadership from Working Parent’s Career As we navigate through our careers, we often overlook the wealth of wisdom hidden within the experiences of our working parents. Here are some invaluable pieces I have taken from observing mine, especially my mother- a beacon of professionalism and leadership: 1. Demonstrating talent and competence demands diligent effort and strategic thinking, instilling a sense of self-esteem and commanding respect. That’s what makes some individuals stand out and difficult to negotiate with 2. The pillars of integrity, honesty, and transparency are foundational for building trust and credibility in any organizational setting 3. Aligning with an organization's vision, fueled by dedication and passion, brings clarity of purpose, strategic alignment, and a shared sense of unity 4. Being the catalyst of change and leading by example, does have a transformative impact on individuals, teams, and organizations, leading to increased motivation, productivity, and success 5. Staying abreast of industry trends, coupled with maintaining a positive mindset and decisiveness in decision-making, is essential not only for effective leadership but also for overall well-being. of Of all, some values that hit home for me are inclusivity, Kindness, and the act of giving back! Taking a step forward is about reverse parenting where she would either adopt or finetune the qualities she admires in me, such as emotional intelligence, diverse perspectives, reading self-help books, psychological insight, being a life-long student, and engagement in yoga & meditation, as a means of personal growth. My mother is currently serving her second term as Principal in her school located in NCR, India. With a total of 38 years in the education sector, comprising 34 years of teaching high school Mathematics and the last 4 years of administrative role, she has demonstrated unwavering resilience and steadfastness. One of the most important aspects of planning and personal growth is creating goals for the upcoming year. Setting objectives for all aspects of our lives is important, but it is even more important to keep in mind the power of FOCUS. Set as many goals as you need to as the New Year draws near. However, if possible, choose one primary or overarching goal and give it your all. Devote sixty to eighty percent of your time and energy to this single goal. Splintered energy contributes to stress and dissatisfaction. Concentrated effort yields greater satisfaction and better outcomes. Try it and share your result/outcome at the end of the coming year. Choose an accountability partner who can provide moral support and hold you accountable for your action plan. Look out for my feedback at the end of 2024. #goalsetting #goals #focus #personaldevelopment #plantowin

A study from 2021 in the Metro suggested that up to 75% of the workforce asks themselves if they want to carry on doing what they are doing. CVs are brushed up over the holidays and prepared for distribution. Are you worried about your company's talent leaving in March? Gym memberships famously mushroom in January. But, not everyone will actually make a lasting change. The people that stick to their resolutions are the people who have motivation and drive. They follow-through with their commitments and these are the people you really want to stay. People leave because they believe that moving on will be better than sticking around. It’s probably not a money issue – though it is likely that this is the tool that you will use to persuade them to stay. You've got nothing else to hand. Building capabilities creates opportunities for people in your organisation, instils a sense of belief and motivation. It protects you from the holes left by high-value departures.
