We need innovative technological breakthroughs to advance the future of home internet connectivity. The appetite for more data and better experiences is more significant in this post-COVID world. Qualcomm has been among the front-runners in wireless and connectivity innovations to meet these expectations. For example, late last year, they announced several products and features, including a 10G Fiber Gateway Platform and Service-Defined Wi-Fi technology, that have the potential to revolutionize home internet connectivity. However, the underlying assumption is that service providers will eliminate legacy Cable/DSL networks and invest in Fiber instead. Traditionally, this has been a slow process. So then the question is, how will these connectivity innovations by Qualcomm scale? Or will these stay limited to niche markets only? In an insightful clip below, Rahul Patel (Group General Manager, Connectivity, Broadband & Networking at Qualcomm Inc.) offers a comprehensive insight into the future of home internet connectivity. Rahul explains that by 2023, fiber uptake has already reached 40% of the subscriber base. According to some research reports, the fiber run rate for the 10G broadband connection in the next five years will be close to 60%. 🌐📶 Discover the state of 5G deployment worldwide. A recent publication by the 5G Observatory, supported by VVA Group with PolicyTracker & LS telcom and the European Commission, offers an overview of how leading countries are progressing in the implementation of this key technology for the future of connectivity and competitiveness. 🇨🇳 China leads with over 1.8 million base stations, which equates to 132 stations per 100,000 inhabitants and a subscriber base of over 357 million. 🇰🇷 South Korea stands out with 215,000 base stations and over 25 million subscribers, showcasing impressive 5G densification with 415 base stations per 100,000 inhabitants. 🇯🇵 Japan has deployed over 50,000 base stations, with a subscriber base exceeding 14 million. 🇺🇸 The USA has installed around 100,000 base stations, with a subscriber base of approximately 79 million, including Canada. 🇪🇺 The EU, with over 256,000 base stations, has connected around 31 million subscribers in Western Europe. The EU, Japan, and the USA lag behind with only 57, 40, and 30 base stations per 100,000 inhabitants respectively. We are seeing more and more plug-and-play 5G solutions emerge as 5G SA offers new opportunities for carriers. The mobile operators are starting to get a bit desperate about the upper 6GHz band in the run-up to World Radio Congress. Vodafone has just trumpeted its ability to use 6GHz spectrum for a 5G test (see link), with a rather hilarious headline claiming an imminent "capacity crunch" for spectrum and highly dubious 30% demand forecasts in the article. Using 200MHz channels and massive MIMO beamforming, it even managed to blast through building walls to indoor end-devices nearby, giving up to 2Gbps downlink speeds. Oddly, there was no mention of achieved uplink speeds from the device back to the network, nor the energy use of the mMIMO radio needed. I also hosted a 6GHz panel at #NetworkX Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) #WGCEMEA yesterday, which was a bit one-sided with 3 WiFi panellists, but the brave BT Group / EE spectrum lead tried to argue for outdoor use of 6GHz 5G (but seemed to accept the outdoor-to-indoor was questionable). His main argument seemed to be that it could offload traffic from other 5G bands that *can* reach indoors. More generally, this all looks a bit like an increasingly desperate attempt by the mobile sector to justify IMT identification for the upper 6GHz band at #WRC23. It's now looking obviously unsuitable, especially for macro / wide-area use. Plenty of regulators are allocating it for unlicensed use - which of course would enable both #WiFi7 and also unlicensed #5G . Even if ITU decides on IMT identification, it would not be usable until at least 2030 anyway, as this type of deployment would not be able to exist with incumbent users in the band & they would have to be cleared out of it - non-trivial (or cheap) given wide use of the frequency range for utility grids, satellite earth stations and (critically) earth/oceanographic scientific sensing. Helpfully Vodafone's press release confirmed that "around 75% of all mobile traffic originates from users at home, in the office, or in enclosed public places such as cafes, bars, shops, and gyms", which is a great justification for regulators pushing for more dedicated and energy-efficient indoor wireless systems, whether that's neutral-host cellular, or Wi-Fi. [edit: the use of the term “originates from users” is also very useful, as it contradicts the usual lie of “large traffic generators” being responsible for mobile traffic] [edit 2: looking at the picture in the press release the term “relatively modern glass fronted offices” likely means a single-glazed window without metal foil”. The phone is also attached to what looks like a trolley load of gear too] In summary: policymakers need proper indoor wireless strategies. National 6GHz licenses for macro-deployed 5G aren't a reasonable part of that.
