Launch of a pioneering translational research program in Europe

#France has a great ecosystem for #health #innovation! And that’s what I was happy to elaborate on during the FACCNE ⎮ French-American Chamber of Commerce, New England Life Science Panorama panel discussion dedicated to the French ecosystem of innovation.   The health chapter of the France 2030 stimulus package not only puts €7.5Bn on the table, but more importantly it brings additional dynamics and ambition to R&D activities throughout the country: ✅ Academic research gets a €3.5Bn ticket for Priority Research Programs (PEPR), technology platforms, and up to 50 Chairs of Excellence which will soon be open to application from international talented scientists ✅ Universities further closes the gap with hospitals through the selection and funding of 12 thematic institutes (IHU) ✅ 5 thematic bioclusters get about €200M each in governmental and industrial funds to boost innovation and company creation in cancer, neurosciences, immunology, infectious diseases and genomics. Although life for a public or private researcher is not easy everyday, France is getting increasingly better in innovation, with an improved articulation between public and private worlds, more high profile and ambitious projects, and an enhanced appetite for translational processes that bring academic excellence in new companies, which are supported by a large range of early stage actors, which include Medicen Paris Region, France Biotech, Choose Paris Region and Business France. Servier, committed to improving the life of #patients, is very happy to contribute to these innovation dynamics, being a recognized partner of a range of academic and clinical institutions, investing in our new world-class R&D center in #parissaclay, and supporting early stage companies with #Spartners, a building in our Paris-Saclay campus where companies can connect with the Servier experts and thrive with the BioLabs France team. However, its rapid expansion has also presented challenges, such as maintaining legitimacy, while engaging with practice and policy partners. 1. **Growth and Development**: Implementation science has seen substantial growth and is now an established research field, with progress made in research and training. 2. **Challenges of Rapid Growth**: The field faces the challenge of balancing its integration within other research fields with the need to remain relevant and responsive to practice and policy needs. 3. **Future Directions**: The article suggests embracing a "big tent" approach, where all partners contribute to the development and execution of implementation studies. It emphasizes the importance of community building among researchers and practitioners. 4. **Historical Context**: The roots of implementation science can be traced back centuries. Key movements have come from diffusion of innovation, community-based participatory research, evidence-based medicine, and from funding agencies. 5. **Contributions to Literature and Practice**: The field has expanded research, training, and funding opportunities, to address the need for studies relevant to practice and policy. It aims to improve health on a large scale by fostering a community of science & practice. The ultimate aim for these observations is to re-establish implementation science as a “big tent,” building upon a foundation of the many fields that implementation science has learned from in creating its theoretical and empirical base.

We’re inspired by Prof Saw Seang Mei and her team of researchers Assoc Prof Audrey Chia, the late Prof Roger Beuerman and Adj Prof Donald Tan, who are making great strides in expunging Singapore’s status as the myopia capital of the world 🌍🚀 Through groundbreaking work, they have identified low-dose atropine eye drops as a safe and effective treatment option for managing myopia in children, earning them the prestigious President's Science Award in 2019 👏 But it doesn't stop there! Prof Saw has also made significant progress in identifying predictive markers for high myopia and developing a method to measure genetic risk with DNA swabs. After 12 months of hard work to evolve our clinical research sponsorship pathway at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, we launched our new first iteration today. 🥳 Developing and setting up sponsored clinical research is highly complex, and the challenge is to make these processes as straightforward and transparent as possible to ensure that studies get underway as quickly as possible. Every day of process delay blocks patients from benefiting from our research. ⏰ During 2023, we commissioned Luke Brewer to undertake an extensive listening exercise with over 80 clinical research stakeholders to provide feedback on our sponsor approval processes. 17 recommendations were made. The information gained has been used to begin our bold evolution, to design and implement an ideal pathway for sponsor approval for clinical research home grown by our world leading researchers. We have: 1️⃣Cut complexity by implementing a single committee review and approval preventing researchers from getting stuck between requirements of different groups. 2️⃣Improved understanding through new simple process maps and improved guidance that gets straight to the point. 3️⃣Built consistency through a range of new templates for researchers to use and adapt, preventing constant reinvention of the wheel. 4️⃣Embedded proportionate and pragmatic thinking though a new triage to identify requirements upfront, an upskilled workforce, and a reinvigorated hands on culture to proactively troubleshoot through rapid escalation and encouragement. 5️⃣Established a new source of expertise through a brand new post focused solely on data and artificial intelligence research governance. 6️⃣Provided transparency through a new data visualisation dashboard driven by QlilSense platform. Time will tell if these have the desired effect. Whilst we are confident that these changes will improve the speed and experience of applying for sponsor approval for clinical research, we will continue to seek feedback and implement continuous improvement 🫵 #continuousimprovement #research
