We have not learned from the crack epidemic when violence initially was at an all time high and I was and Juvenile Court Administrator on the front lines. Policing and incarceration of violent offenders is important but does address why violence has continued to exist the last 30 years in certain zip codes and especially among teenagers and young adults. This is not unique to Columbus but nationally in poor neighborhoods. During the crack era the United States incarcerated more people than any country in the world but here we are again. Unless the core issues for this violence in our poorer communities is addressed 30 years from now violence will still be an issue. The powers to be have not learned that the most important element of addressing this violence is prevention and community engagement not incarceration.
Today, we took our roll call right to the streets of Columbus. It is important that those who choose to perpetuate violence in Columbus know that they will receive our full attention. Our officers are some of the best trained in the country. We won’t stop until Columbus is the safest largest city in America.
