A few weeks back, we talked about common challenges US companies face when entering Europe. Now, here is the reverse scenario MAKING THE JUMP ACROSS THE ATLANTIC WON'T BE EASY ------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is what can go wrong: 1️⃣ Assuming universal appeal: Your European success doesn't guarantee a warm reception in the US. Customization is key to meet the diverse needs of American consumers and businesses. In fact, I have barely seen an industry where US customers think the same way their European counterparts do. 2️⃣ Understanding regional differences: The US isn't a monolith. Dive deep into regional nuances to tailor your software offerings and strategies effectively. In my experience, the Mid West tends to be more conservative, following what the East and West Coast do. 3️⃣ Hiring: as per Anastasia Albert 🇺🇦: I remember how we launched Coresystems AG in the US only to realise that the VP Sales over there was great in selling himself but never delivered on selling the software 🙈 4️⃣ Facing fierce competition: The US software market is crowded. Make sure you properly identify the competitive alternatives to your offering. 5️⃣ Establishing local presence: Being there matters. US customers have a strong tendency to prefer buying from US entities. 6️⃣ Investing in marketing and sales: With their more conservative marketing and selling approach European companies will face a tougher time in the States. 7️⃣ Navigating regulatory complexities: Compliance is non-negotiable. Ensure your software meets US data privacy laws, industry and tax regulations, and IP rights. 8️⃣ Prioritizing localization and UX: Seamless user experiences are key. Localize interfaces, documentation, and support to meet American user expectations. 9️⃣ Budgeting for expansion costs: It's a costly endeavor. The US is a huge market and you should carefully plan and budget for marketing, sales, operations, and infrastructure investments. 🔟 Leveraging strategic partnerships: Partnerships open doors. I was considering applying until I saw that it requires someone with "hard core" economics background. So probably not this time, although it seems like an interesting offer. It got me thinking... Money is not a purely economic concept, is it? It is a cultural concept. It is also very emotional. The "money issue" requires a truly interdisciplinary approach and cannot be solved within the sector that actually brought endless crises to our heads. The impact of Analyst relations is hard to measure 🚨 Personal opinion alert 🚨: The challenge with AR? It’s mostly about anecdotes, less about hard data. I am yet to find someone who is able to systematically measure the impact of AR. If you think you are, comment below, keen to talk! Despite the anecdotal nature of the impact of analyst relations, there is a common view that being on the radar of the analyst firms and appearing on their reports contributes to growth. Like when commercetools hit a ‘hat trick’ with recognitions from top tech analyst firms, unlocking doors to the APAC market in a big way last year. It’s the kind of tale that gets you thinking, “what could the right analyst relations do for us?” Getting a nod from reputable analyst firms can put vendors in a great position. Suddenly, you’re not just another face in the crowd, but a voice worth listening to, but while being mentioned is a great achievement, AR’s influence extends beyond. Data Nerds!! Are some countries less friendly to English speakers in the job hunt? Well, it turns out... kinda, let me explain 👇🏼 So Ilias Samathrakis, Ph.D. has been diving into my job posting data at datanerd.tech He was a Greek expat in Germany for a number of years. During that time, he was searching for jobs, and he found that a lot of the postings he came across required a high level of proficiency in German. (or "Deutsch" for native speakers 🇩🇪) So he was curious... to what extent is this true in other regions of Europe 🤔 Do they prioritize those who speak in their native languages over those who can only speak English? For this analysis, Ilias investigated the "English friendliness" of job postings to see how many jobs do not require the official language of a country Oh! And you can explore the results in his dashboard (linked below), WHICH you can even filter for based on job titles! 🤓 He'll be working to expand the dashboard beyond Europe in the future! P.S. I was pretty blown away by these findings, as I worked in Germany (albeit I didn't search for jobs at the time), and the ease at which I could interact with everyone in English was awesome, so I had no clue about this bias in job postings. 🤯

📢 💡 Saturday update: just putting the final touches to another AI / data thought-leader's CV. This involves distilling the info down to two pages / 1000 words whilst ensuring the key themes / selling points are included, the CV is super-compelling and it's understandable to the general reader. As mentioned in an earlier post, I will soon be recruiting software developers and others for a start-up client via my exec search biz. I'm currently in Vienna after spells in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia over the last five weeks. I've wanted to visit these countries for many years and it's been as interesting as I hoped. Next stop Graz (2nd biggest city in Austria).
