The story of my Catalan ancestors, the Ferran and Subira families, is a testament to the resilience, determination, and pursuit of freedom that defines the Catalan people. Fleeing Franco's oppressive regime during the Spanish Civil War, they embarked on a courageous journey from Catalonia to seek refuge in pre-Castro Cuba, where they began rebuilding their lives, preserving their Catalan heritage amidst a foreign land. Their quest for a brighter future took them to pre-Castro Cuba, where they established themselves and worked hard to create a new life. However, in 1961, when Castro took over in a coup, they found themselves fleeing communism once more, leading them to seek exile in Miami, Florida, where I was born. The vibrant Cuban exile community in Miami welcomed the Catalan families with open arms, offering them a new beginning in a land that embraced their resilience and the values they held dear. My personal connection to this story reflects the Catalan character, valuing hard work, honesty, and respect for others. Growing up in Miami, I inherited the Catalan appreciation for diversity, forging lifelong friendships and embracing the unique blend of cultures that define my hometown. This tale of my family's journey from Catalonia to pre-Castro Cuba and then to exile in Miami is more than just history—it's a living legacy of bravery and adaptability, a story of escaping oppression not once, but twice, and it continues to shape my character, influencing how I approach life and blending the best of two worlds into a unique and inspiring narrative. https://lnkd.in/g5aC5jfY

This is a powerful journey of self-discovery and a deep dive into the complex history of Indo-Caribbean migration to Trinidad. This resonates deeply with me as someone with Trinidadian roots, connecting not just through shared geography but also through the layers of history and identity that shape our narratives. Thank you, Anna-Liza Badaloo for taking the initiative to explore and share this important aspect of your heritage, shedding light on the lesser-known history of Indian indentured servants in the Caribbean. Anna's personal reflections on privilege, particularly within the context of the divisive dynamic between Black and Indian communities in Trinidad, add a nuanced layer to the narrative. It's a courageous acknowledgment of the historical impact on relationships and attitudes. In understanding our individual stories, we can contribute to an ongoing conversation about identity, privilege, and the ever-evolving understanding of our roots. Through intentional exploration, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and enriched understanding of ourselves and others.
Organizational Justice Consultant. Unlearner. Inclusive Storyteller. Leveraging empathy to confront colonial harms and foster organizational justice.
How can we use our privilege if we can't acknowledge it? In my latest for the Indo-Caribbean Canadian Association's STORY publication, I reflect upon being a descendant of Indian indentured servants, the impacts upon my own internalized racism, and how the Black/Indian divide that the colonizers set up then, still reverberates today. When the British abolished Black slavery around 1834 they had a problem: how could they maintain the ever-growing British Empire without enslaved Africans? Between 1845 and 1917 an astonishing 143,939 Indians came to Trinidad under the system of Indian indenture. Read the full piece to learn what they were promised, and how this history factors into current tensions between Brown and Black folks in the Caribbean and beyond: https://lnkd.in/gxgXxfxd #caribbean #indiandiaspora #colonialism

Seneca Environmental joins our parent company, Seneca Holdings, in celebrating Native American Heritage Month and the rich heritage of the Seneca Nation. In this time to honor the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous people, let's take the opportunity to highlight the importance of energy sovereignty for all Native communities. Energy sovereignty refers to the right of communities to make their own decisions about energy generation, distribution, and consumption in a way that is appropriate for them. Because energy affects everything we do, it is a critical component of community sovereignty. The Seneca Nation is a leader in deploying #renewableenergy on territory to benefit Seneca members. All Native communities should have this option. Let's flip the old, extractive model of energy generation and bring access to renewable energy to all communities! #nativeamericanheritagemonth #energysovereignty #energyjustice

Every year in the month of February African American History is celebrated. Why? Because it is important to praise the importance of the African-American community, its contributions and its legacy in the country. Additionally, we can take this time to honor their eternal fight to end the abuses and inequalities they have suffered since their arrival in the United States.
