International Women’s Day 2024 Recently, a post by @Laura Kennedy on LinkedIn caught my eye. It made me realize that not much seems to have changed since I finished my studies. In light of International Women's Day, I decided to research the state of diversity and inclusion for women in construction, particularly comparing different countries like Ireland to my home country, Greece. I was pleased to discover that Ireland boasts a 30% female workforce in construction. I firmly believe that increasing the number of women in construction will lead to a more productive, diverse, and efficient industry. Advancements in technology and investment in people are transforming construction into a vast and multifaceted field. The benefits of gender diversity in this industry can be immense. #internationalwomensday2024 's Day #8mars March #womeninconstruction #diversityandinclusion #civilengineering #womeninengineering

Returning to a theme which is very important to us at Contract Scotland - in an industry where women represent only 16% of the workforce, how can we get more women into engineering? 🛠️ Diverse teams are not just varied; they're smarter and more innovative. We've made progress, but there's still work to do in education and employment to close the gender gap. For a forward-thinking workforce, especially as Gen Z approaches, we must debunk the myth that engineering isn't for women. Inclusion and transparency are key. Post-International Women's Day, let's maintain momentum and support women in engineering roles. To encourage change, promote inclusivity, fair hiring, and equal opportunities. Let's build a future where the engineering industry thrives on diversity. #WomenInEngineering #DiversityInSTEM #InclusionMatters

Women's Engineering Society (WES) CEO Elizabeth Donnelly predicts it will take "another 50 years for engineering to reach gender parity." In her interview with the New Civil Engineer on June 23rd for International Women in Engineering Day—a WES initiative—Elizabeth discusses the ongoing efforts and progress in closing the gender gap in civil engineering. Key takeaways: 📚𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗠 𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: “Engineering is harder to get into as a girl. Schools will generally funnel girls towards law or medicine”. 📈 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹: The number of women taking up engineering has almost doubled in the last decade to 500,000. 📺 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Like doctors and lawyers, engineers need greater representation in media to spark widespread interest in the profession. Interestingly, female representation in medicine and law was only 15-20% in the 1980s, similar to the current levels in civil engineering today, and is now closer to 40%. It’s hard to believe that in 1969, only 0.5% of the total workforce were women. It only goes to show change is possible! In 1980, women made up just 5% of individuals working in architecture and engineering. But how far have we come today? As of 2023, women make up 16.7% of workers in this industry. While that percentage has more than tripled since the 80s, there’s more to be done to increase that representation. And with a projected average of 21,000 openings for civil engineers each year for the next decade, we need more women to see their future in engineering! For this Women's History Month, let's take a moment to recognize the ways women have been breaking barriers and building bridges (sometimes literally) in what has historically been an industry primarily occupied by men. SCROLL for surprising stats and perspectives of a few women leaders at Consor. 🤔➡️ To the women leaders, engineers, construction managers, inspectors, and MANY other professionals who make our work possible—thank you for blazing trails for the next generation. 💪🎉 Thank you to Noelle Ziobro, Erika Schuyler, E. Gayle Grady, and Zina Schwartz for sharing your perspectives! #womenshistorymonth #womeninSTEM #womeninengineering #civilengineering Stats from Society of Women Engineers (https://lnkd.in/gaFJjQXt), US Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://lnkd.in/gQW3Eu-r) and (https://lnkd.in/g5NAUUQv), American Society for Engineering Education (https://lnkd.in/gm7RNAcJ), Center for Construction Research and Training (https://lnkd.in/e8h9fQN), and Institute for Women’s Policy Research (https://lnkd.in/g54CS-RA).

Some interesting statists coming our or the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) Women's Networking session about PPE by Katy Robinson 60% of companies don't offer specific PPE for women. We have to challenge and change this and make sure all construction workers are safe. #PPE #womeninconstruction #women #constructionindustry

Today we celebrate Women in Construction Week, Day 1! Each day, we’re highlighting one of our talented employee-owners crushing it in the field and on jobsites across the country. Grace Yarnell Stringless Paving Tech Emery Sapp & Sons What she does: Part surveyor, part field engineer, part autopilot, Grace helps operate various machines, including concrete pavers, subgrade trimmers and even asphalt pavers. Years in the industry: 8 years Why she stays: “Because it’s rare to find a job where you not only feel like you’re taken care of but also one you love. Construction, especially at ESS, isn’t just a job for me — it’s a career path.” Advice for other women: “Working in construction and being able to make my own path has given me not only independence but a confidence I carry with me in and out of the field. I will always continue to encourage women who are ready to pave their own future. There are opportunities here and in every part of construction; you just have to take it.” @national-association-of-women-in-construction #KeysToTheFuture #wicweek #wicweek24 #womeninconstructionweek2024
