Nothing is impossible. (How to be an ad-person: Rant No.1) “How to survive as a Saatchi & Saatchi suit.” This is an age old document that was stuck in most of the offices of Saatchi & Saatchi, worldwide. Got hold of this from one of my mentors last week. This document has 209 tips. We can just replace the agency name and the rules apply to any ad agency! I am dissecting these 209 tips with my own points of view, through 209 posts. This is the 1st post in this series! The 1st Tip is Nothing is impossible. Though this is like a universal motivational quote No.1, it weighs more when it comes to agency life. Right from confusing briefs, to unrealistic deadlines of presentations to last minute changes in the art works just before it is supposed to be delivered to the media house. The situation gets into your nerves and you feel it’s over, it’s just impossible. So many times the brief is so confusing, even the client servicing team end up feeling they might not be able to crack it; they are scared to death on how to brief the creative team! Last minute changes in contact number in the dealer panel? Sounds real? However you end up cracking them. The brief, the deadlines, you come out as a winner. Some rules that we need to follow: ·     Remain calm, consistently. ·     The client servicing team should be empathetic to the creative team and vice versa. ·     Be empathetic towards the client. Work as a team and make the impossible, possible. By the way, Impossible is Nothing is my all-time favourite tagline. An inside joke when I worked at BBDO Worldwide: Omnicom is a real estate company that dabbles in marketing communications. That said, I get it, given the 360º perspective my roles have afforded me. I began my career in brand management with Campbell's in Canada, and worked with many wonderful agencies and agency folks. After moving to the U.S. for marketing leadership roles with North American and/or global scope, I had to apportion my marketing budget across the most profitable product lines and geographies. Now as a management consultant, both with a global firm for the last 4 years and as an independent to ~20 clients, I've analyzed the profitability of several industries, incl. advertising. Canada is a comparatively low-margin market, with small budgets and high costs (e.g., real estate). All agencies do more or less the same thing. Just go to the websites of any handul and see how they talk about themselves. That's not a dig at adland; the same can be said about management consulting firms or most any professional services category. How well each firm does it, for whom, and by whom can definitely make a difference. The HoldCos like Omnicom will be OK. Independent agencies will be OK. i have spent some of my happiest working years in Y&R, DY&R, WCJ, impiric, Wunderman as well as a partnership between Y&R and Wunderman, at a time when integrated offerings were unheard of. DY&R was the affiliation with Dentsu, back in the day. this business of transformation is always a delicate balance between cannibalising your legacy and creating a fitter, speedier and more flexible model. after a point, legacy becomes the victim of its own success. but its also a delicate balance between sustainability in the model as well as fiddling around regularly, to time the market. and i am sure WPP wouldnt have taken the decision lightly, to get rid of the biggest icons in their portfolio and name it after a lesser known alphabet soup, although i think Wunderman would have been a better fit than VML. i guess, the key Q - how do you serve a new type of client, with a new set of challenges, from a legacy business? but whats in a name if the new business is just a new name for the old business? if the new business continues to monetise ad products, instead of solving big business problems?
