Eugene, OR has a beautiful river district! Who knew? Well, we did. And you may have been watching these plans develop, too. SERA Architects urban planning team have been involved in this master planning effort since 2017, and now we have the privilege of being the architect, interior designer, and landscape architect of the first building to be completed here. The city of Eugene has been working for 14 years to revitalize this area, which used to be the Eugene Water and Electric Board HQ. Now it beautifully connects Downtown with the Willamette River—and people are living there! Heartwood is not only welcoming and beautiful, it's both Fitwel Certification System and Earth Advantage Platinum certified—this new riverfront district is off to a great, #sustainable start! The folks cutting the ribbon are Jim Atkins (developer Atkins & Dame), Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis, and Denny Braud (Executive Director, City of Eugene Planning & Development Administration). Urbanism: Analysing Seattle Downtown • The skyline is dominated with corporate glazing facades. • The visual scene lacks harmony and sense of identity. • Urban streets are well defined and are divided into grids of N-S Avenues and E-W streets. • It is well connected by public transport and streets are user friendly. • Part of the streets are too steep for pedestrian comfort and is a challenge for the senior citizens and less abled.
