Is Viagra a longevity therapeutic? Please read Science Writer Michael Rae’s SENSible Answer to this month’s selected question: https://lnkd.in/en5pyimM A recent preprint reports that use of Viagra and related drugs is associated with a lower mortality rate, raising hopes that it might be repurposed as a longevity therapeutic. Unfortunately, the methodology used in this and other recent studies is too weak to arouse too much excitement just yet. Please send us your SENSible Question to SENSibleQ@sens.org! Each month, we will select one question and post it in our SENSible Answer Blog. #ViagraResearch #LongevityTherapeutic #HealthResearch #AntiAging #SENSibleQuestion

We appreciate the use of RPLC and HILIC for the same sample extract. If the columns would consequently be coupled (e.g. in a serial RPLC-HILIC) the authors would have a polarity-extended chromatographic separation in one run. For more details see also the LinkedIn post: https://lnkd.in/d43BJzhf #HILIC #LCMS #analyticalchemistry #analytics #chromatography
Markus Meyer and colleagues at Saarland University developed a new method for detecting and quantifying a variety of drugs of abuse, cognitive enhancers, and their metabolites in wastewater using a combination of HILIC and RP HPLC. This approach, which offers several advantages over traditional methods, should help track drug usage trends and inform public health interventions. #HILIC #LCMS https://lnkd.in/eRNK_qqA

You can defy social norms on aging & show up as your best self anywhere. Perimenopause and menopause DON'T have to be a nightmare. ☺️
Alright, let's chat about something that's been buzzing around recently. Ozempic and its potential link to a rare eye condition. 🧐 Harvard Medical School released a study suggesting that semaglutide, found in weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, might be tied to a higher risk of a rare eye disease, NAION, which can lead to vision loss in one eye. 😳 Now, before you hit the panic button, let's break it down. Analysts are saying the study's findings aren't a game-changer. The evidence quality is low, and the sample size was small. Basically, the data isn't strong enough to cause major concern right now. Novo Nordisk, the maker of Ozempic, emphasizes that patient safety is a top priority and points out some limitations in the study. Plus, the company has seen massive growth, and Ozempic has benefits beyond weight loss, like reducing heart disease risk. So, while it's essential to stay informed, let's not jump to conclusions just yet. But I ain’t saying you should go run and grab some Ozempic to lose the fat, alright? I’m still on the natural side of healing and weight loss, ladies. Always talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns and remember, it's about finding the right balance for your health journey. What do you think about Ozempic? Let’s talk in the comments. #ozempic #weightlossdrug

It was a privilege to be asked by Mike to contribute as co-author for this paper published in Nature Drugs. Mike, Justin & Jason are leaders in this space and it’s testament to their expertise to have been invited by the editor to submit this piece. We see significant reductions (substitution effects in health economics) in the use of other medicines for Gynecological presentations when cannabinoids are deployed for pain management. Insurance implications? patients need to be encouraged to transition from illicit to legal products, disclose and discuss use with doctors to enable safe deprescribing of other drugs, private health insurers need to reimburse cannabinoids to optimise dose utility (costs) and life insurers need to adjust / improve underwriting guidelines to distinguish methods of administration / HRQoL outcomes in pricing risk.
Endometriosis, pelvic pain and period pain - working to reduce the negative impact of pelvic and menstrual pain
One of my proudest moments for 2023 research wise - our invited expert opinion on the place of cannabinoids in the treatment of gyanecological pain is out now in Nature Drugs and free for everyone to read. We've tried to summarise the shortcomings with current treatment and how cannabinoids may play a role in symptom reduction for endometriosis, pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. More clinical trials are needed (and thankfully we've had some fabulous support from Wilson Foundation and the Victorian Government to get these running) but current evidence suggests significant potential for better symptom management for the billions of women and those who menstruate who suffer from regular pelvic pain. https://lnkd.in/gi4eqfRP

Could Drug Side Effects Actually Be Beneficial? Discover the intriguing side of medication side effects in this eye-opening article by Dr. Robert H. Shmerling for Harvard Health Publishing. While we often associate side effects with negative outcomes, Dr. Shmerling explores the rare instances where they can be beneficial, such as Minoxidil's unexpected hair growth or Sildenafil's famous effect on erectile dysfunction. He also delves into how drug developers are now using these unintended effects to repurpose medications for new treatments. This thoughtful piece sheds light on the silver linings of drug side effects and encourages a balanced perspective on medication use. Read the full article for a comprehensive understanding of both the good and bad sides of drug side effects. https://1l.ink/QNTVDQB
